I don't think there is such a thing as a 'must win' game in August but I can't help feeling we really do need three points from this one. I am guessing that Brightlingsea may be the first 'lower half' team that we have played this season and with another very tough one coming up on Monday, I do feel we need to get that first win.
I get the feeling Gary is still trying to work out his best team, not helped by injuries of course, and I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a lot of the squad making an appearance at some stage over the two matches this weekend
A bit of a test coming up for the supporters too. Our typical home attendance has pretty well doubled since 2019 and a lot of the 'new fans' have only ever been used to a side that wins most of its matches and scores plenty of goals. Obviously we all hope this continues but early signs are that it's not going to be quite such a smooth ride this time around.
The supporters' loyalty will be tested anyway when Winter sets in and everyone really starts to feel the cost of living 'pinch'. So plenty of reasons for an entertaining win on Saturday.
First of all congratulations to our long term supporter Keith who won todays 50/50 with ticket 00596. Prize £147.50. As for the game an excellent performance , thought we got better as the game went on ,everyone played their part especially Joe, 2 goals on debut and Man of the Match . Onto Lewes.
Think that was the best debut performance I have seen from any Hastings player-Joe was excellent. And Jake Elliott was just as good as he was before he left for Eastbourne. Great afternoon at the Pilot Field.
I think we got not only the result but also the performance that we all wanted today. OK, Brightlingsea won't be our biggest challenge this season but that performance has certainly gone a long way to removing any early concerns.
No surprise that Jake Elliott looked good today but I was equally impressed by Alex Brefo. Clearly these signings will give Gary a selection problem.....but good news that we now have plenty of cover at the back.
MotM quite rightly went to Joe Gbode (and didn't he enjoy the plaudits !) but Sam Hasler must have pushed him close with that wonder goal and a very powerful performance as the star in our midfield today.
Felt for Ben who tried hard but didn't make any impact today. We've seen him go through lean spells and I'm sure he'll bounce back.
So pleased to see an impressive attendance after our disappointing start to the season. I would expect everyone will be back for the next one and plenty will be making the trip on Monday.
Really pleased to see some positivity back after what was clearly an excellent result. Intrigued to know how we lined up today though. Was it the usual 4-3-3 or something different?
Sean,
I would say we played with our more traditional back four with Stone and Brefo in the centre, Black at left back and Elliott playing in the same right back role as he did before.
I would also say we played with Gbode and Pope leading the line with Chalmers, Dixon, Hasler and Carvalho across the middle......so, if anything, it looked most like a 4-4-2 but with plenty of flexibility.
I await to be corrected.
Many thanks gents. The starting XI that was named appeared to credibly lend itself to any number of formations, 4-3-3, 3-5-2, 3-4-3, etc, etc, but it’s interesting to know that a traditional old 4-4-2 did the trick.
Not as traditional as your 2-3-5 though, Phil, I grant you. Mind you, if that formation couldn’t get Ben adequate support, nothing ever could, so perhaps we ought to give it a try. Craig and Finn might beg to differ though.
