Yes, it looks like the playoffs are a distant echo of last August’s optimism, but bear with me, there is a way we can get in to the playoff spots by finishing 7th. It requires an awful lot to go our way and of course, but it’s possible. Apologies if this has appeared elsewhere on the forum.

Next season the non-league pyramid is being reorganised yet again. 19 teams are being promoted from our level. This means that of the 6 leagues who are at the same level as us one league will be given an extra promotion spot. The top 2 in each league will be automatically promoted, plus 6 more from the playoffs (one from each league). However, to get a 19th club promoted there will be an extra automatic promotion spot for one of the six leagues. (Still with me?)

How is it decided which league gets the extra spot? It comes down to which of the third-placed teams out of the 6 divisions has the best points per game (PPG) ratio. Currently (and has been for quite a number of weeks) this is held by Hyde United (55 points from 25 games) on 2.2 PPG. This means that Trafford, currently 7th in Hyde’s division, would get a playoff spot.

What do we need to happen for us to usurp Trafford? Obviously we have to finish 7th, but (assuming South Park don’t win a decent chunk of their games in hand at the water park) that is well within our grasp looking at the table.

More unlikely is that we need the top three of our division to keep winning. Right now Carshalton (3rd in our division) are 4th in the PPG table of teams currently in the playoff spots with a 2.03 PPG, 0.17 per game off top spot. Carshalton (65 from 32) are closely followed by Greenwich (64 from 32), also from our division, on a 2.00 PPG. Above them are Bamber Bridge on 2.12 and Alvechurch on 2.04. So we would need Hyde, Bamber and Alvechurch to drop a few points and Carshalton or Greenwich to have a good run. We also need Lewes and Cray to stay top 2, or at least not to fall away. It would be okay if Carshalton or Greenwich went past Lewes or Cray, provided Lewes and Cray have a better PPG than Hyde (or whoever it is at that point).

It seems like a lot to ask and it probably is, but it illustrates that these recent dropped points could be crucial. In a couple of weeks Carshalton could be top of the points per game table giving whoever is 7th in our league a playoff spot. If Carshalton win their next 3 and Hyde and Bamber lose their next game and Alvechurch drop points then it’s basically neck and neck.

It's led to the weird situation that I’m looking for about 7 results each week!

And then the playoffs…

Here’s hoping…

Sorry Dave, I pasted the text from elsewhere and it was in camouflage mode. I think I’ve fixed it now.

Very informative. I am curious, though, as to how the ups and downs will work at the end of next season, '18-'19. By then there will be four Step 3 leagues of 22 clubs and feeding into those leagues will be seven step 4 leagues of 20 clubs. United play at step 4 for anyone who's even more confused than me, by the way.

How do 7 step 4 leagues (140 teams) feed into 4 step 3 leagues (88 teams)? Am I missing something desperately obvious?

This link explains the current situation far more succinctly than I did - www.footballwebpages.co.uk/step-4-promotion

Sorry about the headache Phil!

Glad I'm not the only one Phil! I am clued up now - thanks to the original posting - on how the ups and downs work at the end of THIS season but am at a loss to see how they work at the end of next season with the new structure in place. Must be missing something obvious. Currently, 6 divisions feed into 3 - easy and all the maths are fine but how do 7 divisions feed into 4 next season?

www.isthmian.co.uk/ryman-chosen-to-run-new-division-36643

Seems as though there will be 4 premier divisions next season with 22 clubs in each and 7 Bostik South level leagues with 20 clubs in each.

The way I read it is that the Northern Premier will have 1 league, The Southern Premier will have 2 leagues and the Bostik Premier will have 1 League.

But at our level the Bostik league will have 3 divisions, the Southern and Northern will both have 2 each.
How that will affect promotion and relegation I don't know, but what I do know is if we are still playing at this level next season we will have 8 less games per season (4 less home games).
I don't know what the club feels about that because this will mean less income for them!

It's all quite simple really. The FA have reacted to there being too many teams in our league and have changed it to where there will now be too few. It's what they do. They oversee us all and they are totally useless.

With the defeat to Hythe I’m putting away my calculator, I’d say it’s now very unlikely that we’ll finish as high as 7th.
