After the win against EGT it is another home match now against
Greenwich are currently the number 4 in the table with 52 points out 28 games.
Scored 56 and conceded 26 goals. Top scorer is Barham with 17 goals.
Remember last seasons game: https://www.hastingsobserver.co.uk/sport/football/united-s-second-half-treble-sinks-greenwich-1-7693064
And we? Of course we are doing a great job with a team full of young players. But after Lewes is it interesting to see how we deal with the top teams in the League. Greenwich is already 9 games unbeaten and the last loss was against Horsham 0-2.
So with a lot of supporters coming to TPF i hope you all will have a great match.
Really looking forward to this game. As Bert says Greenwich are unbeaten in 9 games (5 draws) whilst we have only lost one in the last ten. Should be a cracker.
I wondered if they have had similar problems to us as they only had three substitutes for Saturdays top of the table clash versus Cray. Should be a cracker if the bloody rain stays away.
Never a better time to sing “there’s only one Bradley Pritchard” as they have one as well and arguably their best player! We have the better one though #hastingsbradleysdomore
Spoke to a Greenwich scout on Saturday who was checking us over. Mentioned that we both had a Bradley Pritchard and he said that there is no way that you could confuse the two.....
Massive reality check today and an indication of perhaps where we truly are as a club. Some pretty decent performances over the past couple of months albeit against pretty mediocre opponents who failed to take their chances but today was a different story. Greenwich looked fitter, bigger and stronger all over the pitch and apart from a 20 min spell in the first half, they were pretty dominant throughout and could have won by even more if they had taken their chances. Can only remember their keeper making one save second half from a Kenny header.
After our customary poor start we settled into the game and reacted pretty well and after good goals by both the new lad and Rodari I really felt we could push on and win the game but after we went ahead there only really looked liked one winner.
I thought defensively we were very average today and four of the five goals were down to errors. I think we can excuse them after recent performances but Tom and Ollie really struggled today against the pacey attack, although the support from midfield was non existent at times. We huffed and puffed and no lack of effort from anyone but a big gulf in class at times.
Don't think there were any stand out performances today and second half I thought the team looked a little leggy and lacklustre and some of the youngsters look like they could do with a break. Perhaps the recent illness throughout finally caught up with us but today showed me we are still a long way behind those at the top.
A couple of other points and firstly our crossing and set pieces are abysmal. I heard some pretty irate supporters in front of the club house 2nd half and they were quite right. Why has Sam Adams, our best set piece taker by a mile, been taken off all set piece duties including penalties? the amount of times Golding and even Crutts waste free kicks and corners is very frustrating, and then the substitute, who has played 2 or 3 games for us then comes on and takes everything, very poorly. Look the difference it makes having a good set piece taker as Greenwich showed. Do we work on these in training?
And finally, and sorry for the Davide fans around, because I have given him huge and deserved credit the last two games but today I actually found his behaviour disgraceful as did many around me. The diving, the constant moaning at team mates and officials and all this after his greediness in squaring the ball to two unmarked players twice stopped us going 3-2 up. We all know its something that goes on abroad but not nice to see at the Pilot Field and I am amazed we let him get away with it. Really poor from him today.
So as I said, certainly a reality check for all today, including myself, and does anyone honestly believe we are two players away from a league winning team as stated by the manager in the Observer? no chance. Of course all teams have off days and Greenwich were certainly the best team I've seen at the Pilot Field this season, but against a really good side, I thought we looked fairly limited at times and I think 9th in the league is just about spot on for this team. We move on and go again next week but very disappointing in front of the biggest crowd of the season.

Spot on as usual John, Greenwich probably best side seen at Pilot Field this season. Seems that we need to shore up the defence rather than sign more forwards.
All good points, but why oh why do we continue to bugger about around our penalty area, when we will learn, we keep giving goals away by messing about, back passing, when we should pushing forward, the best form of defence is attack, and the other team cannot score if you`re in their half. How many times will we give it away before we realise?
John is quite right. Today was a reality check. Greenwich were a more 'professional' side in every sense than we were and we just could not cope. But this is not out of the blue. I thought our defensive performance on Monday was poor. We were bailed out then by Charlie Horlock and managed three points. Today he had an average game; our defensive performance today was worse; we put Charlie under constant pressure with lame back passes; our misplaced passes in mid-field were well into double figures before I lost count; and the inevitable consequence was that we shipped five goals. It's good in theory to play it out from the back. But we need experienced defenders who are prepared to do the simple things when that is necessary. Greenwich certainly understood that. Their left back (number 20) was excellent. (Could we sign him?). And their number 6 - although quite limited in his range of skills beyond knocking it into touch - always did the safety first thing rather than attempt suicidal cross field balls for which we seem to have a penchant. So, as Phil says, the urgent need is to shore up the defense and get two at least experienced defenders. We are not in a bad place even after this defeat; but if we somehow imagine that this was just a bad day at the office and that major changes are unecessary this will be another season which will end in frustration.

Was told we released Rhys today as well. Why would that be? Very little cover if any at the back not helped by Sam Beale being injured every other game, a problem I hear he has had at every club he has played. Where would we be if Ollie picked up an injury? The squad appears to be top heavy with offensive players.
Quite Frankly the balance of the squad is wrong and has been all season. We need a centre half and a defensive midfielder. So we sign another forward it’s weird, have we learnt nothing as a club, last year we could not defend and it’s the same this year, I can’t be bothered to look but how many times in the last 2 seasons have we scored 2 goals and have taken no points from the game? But in Fairness Greenwich looked a very useful outfit and could still finish in the top 2. Whereas we look at top half of league.
Why would we release Rhys. He has looked so good since his return, and having seen our defensive display today I find this a very strange decision. I too agree with Johnw about Davide. He has some nice touches and scores some good goals but I find he gives the ball away too often, gets caught offside far too often, and I do not like his moaning and falling over.
On a different subject, did anyone notice Liam O'Brian playing in the FA cup for Coventry City today.

Good summary John. A frustrating game as after a bad start we played well briefly. But our defending today was suicidal not only the defence but the midfield too who I thought were a little ineffective and offensively too often giving the ball away or giving choosing a bad pass. I am guessing Rodari was number 7. He really should think about playing in Europe with his antics. I think he has been watching too many professional footballers and was lucky the ref did not send him off for diving and getting in the refs face. Greenwich are a decent side. Their 8 and 9 were tremendous but overall I think their fitness and size coped a lot better on a very heavy sticky pitch which we did not really get to grips with. The speed of their attacks and the quick ball into the box were clinical whereas we were trying to pass it around on a difficult surface and that opened us up to mistakes which Greenwich profited from. Maybe in conditions like this we need to play more direct. Was certainly more entertaining than earlier in the season and good the bar stays open for the whole game now
Not a lot to add but think we need to start growing some balls and toughen up . Ajakaiye looked useful but Greenwich obviously had done some homework and got someone to crop him early on . It’s not nice but sometines dirty tricks work . Greenwich were tougher all over the park , yet we were quite happy to leap around screaming hoping for the ref to give a free kick . I think some of younger players are watching too much Premiership Football . It’s embarrassing ! Fair enough some of our players were being hacked down whilst on goal . But ... there were too many dives and screams for my liking . Yep ! Time to toughen up Spicer stylie ! (says he ... never one to get stuck it myself 😂)
Certainly remember Spicer....I think he could be described as a no nonsense player, hard tackling and if necessary the ball would be booted into Row Z...but could also play a bit. Another of the same ilk was the late ‘Smudger Smith ‘ tough and always gave 100%.
Greenwich not likely to let us get away with the defensive mistakes we made against Ramsgate and East Grinstead. Might have been helpful to have Tom Vickers in the side to stiffen the defence or midfield. Quite happy for Hastings to be a passing side-just wish they concentrated on passing in areas which hurt the opposition. Strange that all the pointless passing around our defence usually results in a long ball upfield or worse, losing possession. Hope we can get back to winning ways against Sittingbourne.
This is all a long preseason for 2018-2019 with us still - just - in with a shout of the play offs. I was as baffled as anyone by the changes in policy and tactics of a couple of months back but now find myself into what Agutter is doing though I still think it a huge shame we don't have Simon Johnson any more. To be in with a chance-ish of making the playoffs with such a young side is highly creditworthy to the players and coaching people and it is VITAL that Chris Agutter is here next August as we more than likely kick off in this division again.
Saturday was a real test against a good side. Defensive frailties were to gift them at least three goals and their finishing was first class but a three goal margin was a bit harsh I though. Ansu was a post width away from getting us back to 3-3 and a minute or two later it was 2-4. Dayshonne had a good chance and was that the post that denied Kenny late on? In many ways we were as good as Greenwich but were made to pay for errors. Just one of those days.
Sorry Simon it wasn’t one of those days, we have been getting away with it due to other teams lack of ability in front of goal. The way we have been playing we deserve to concede 4 goals a game. So what do we sign another forward. Chris in your next article in the observer can you please explain why we are signing forwards when it’s clear to most of us it’s defensive frailties that need addressing.
Fair point Chris but I didn't think we were three goals worse quality wise on Saturday but we do indeed need to tighten up that defence. We seem to have settled on Ollie and Tom as central defenders but still have issues with the full backs where we keep tinkering. Mind you - despite hearing he doesn't like it, Sam Cruttwell has been excellent at left back and I'd love to see him stay there.
I don't pretend to understand all Chris's thinking and use of players - if I did, I'd be a football coach - but I do labour my point that he has to start here next season because that team has lots of potential but still needs working on - primarily at the back.
