My god i just witnessed a yong Worthing side give us a lesson in how to play the game. i swear we where lucky to lose by only 2 goals. some of the best football by Worthing i have seen in a long while . they did what we did not move the ball with purpose and pace and the interchanges were far above what we are capable. fantastic game of football if your a Worthing fan ?
Before the happy brigade get on here and say how relieved they are that we are now out of another cup competition and how we can now concentrate on hauling in Folkestone who are a meagre 24 points ahead, I am intrigued to know how fans are honestly feeling as we hit the mid point of the season. Just to recap, we have signed Cole, Medlock, Attwood, Harris, Johnson, Crabb, Walder etc etc, all fantastic players at this level and above right? And yet we are out of every cup competition, let's be honest at a wimper, particularly versus Merthyr and Poole. We now languish in 15th place and have lost 10 games before mid December. That is as many as Terry White lost at the beginning of the season and as many as Nigel Kane lost in the last 4 months of last. How did the squads measure up? Yes we have games in hand but we could just as easily lose these and find ourselves in a relegation battle, yes I said relegation. The management team will stay and rightly so but surely now they have to start delivering immediate results or the pressure will truly be on as both league position and attendances continue to drop. I suggest that Ramsgate is now the biggest game of the season and an absolute must win.
As John says we have some good players and possibly one of the highest playing budgets in the league yet we have not really impressed as a team. Worrying the number of goals conceded from corners or crosses and with Josh's lack of height counting against him we are rather dependent on Sean to win any high balls. Hopefully the second half of the season will see an improvement.
We need a management team who can get the best out of our players and as most of you know, I don't believe our current management team are capable. We are not improving against the better sides, we can only beat poor sides.
Record against top 5 this season P6 Won 1 lost 5 F 5 A 12. Throw in home defeats against Faversham, Poole and Merthyr and it does appear we struggle badly against the better sides.
Against the weaker teams the quality of our players gets us by more often than not despite lacking in tactics, against better sides where players are of equal ability you need a game plan, and either we don't have one, or we do and its either lacking or not being executed.
Worthing Forum -Very disappointed with Hastings other than a bag of corners nothing are we that good or are they that bad. the latter i believe their players on show are suppose to be class the two front men must get more money than most of our squad. we turned them inside out upside down. and with 5 or 6 regular's out. we played fantastic to a man. and must mention the fans behind the goal best in the league by far.
And this puts things into perspective. Where are our u21's coming through?

John.....to pick up on your question regarding the 'half term report'.....
Well I think it goes without saying that the current squad struggles against the best in our league and we can conclude that we're still a good way off being able to regularly compete in a higher standard.
On a more positive note, I do actually attend matches this season with some anticipation that I am going to see an entertaining match with the Us actually producing some cohesive attacking football. OK..as often as not I have been disappointed but we have at least produced a few excellent performances this season and, if I go home happy after a game, then that's really all that matters, not where we are or in what league we are playing........that comes the next morning when the realisation dawns at just how far we are behind many of our historic peers.
But let's be realistic. We were dire for most of last season and we can't really expect to now be where Folkestone are after such a short time. I can't see the 'form' changing too much over the remainder of the season. We'll win more than we lose and we will be competing for a play-off place with half the teams in the league. I'll stick my neck out and say we'll make the top five...but that's where it will end.
However if we can improve by the same amount again then NEXT season could be very interesting.
I guess we all perceive that we are punching well below our weight and feel that Conference South shouldn't be beyond us. However we're always going to struggle against teams with a bit of money around the M25. We don't have the density of population or transport links to make assembling a REALLY good team easy and with so many teams in the South East corner ANY step up seems hard to achieve.
So what's your point Mick we're in a crap league. i don't think it is played in it and it's harder than you think. we have money we have the players. to highly paid in my opinion. but that's only my opinion. are we soft touch. manage the managers!
I don't think we're in a crap league Doeboy. I agree with Mick that if we improve by the same amount next season, it could be interesting. Let's not forget that we could have ended up in country league football for this season, but luckily escaped that with Horsham and Redhill going down, both of which had a very poor season. Having said that, we only finished three points above the drop zone and we've certainly improved this season from last. Man for man, we're as good as any team, we have an excellent and very professional manager. I hope Mick is right saying we'll make the top five. I'm sure we can do it.
Its not working the good players are not gelling and we are an average side. Why would you pay the same players big money next season considering they would have failed this. We must make top 5 if not we would have failed.
at the start of the season my hopes were for gary to assemble a side to take us forward and build for the future,if we finish top half, play offs a bonus great,as said we wont be a folkstone overnight.another season here here imo only wont be the end of the world if we see progression.what I hate are all these games in hand don't think they favour you playing catch up sure this wont be everyones opinion but sure gary will succeed.
Shame about this one as I hoped that after the Crawley win we might have gone further in this competition.
As Worthing say on their website they are now only 2 victories away from a mouthwatering final at Brighton's AMEX Stadium.
I think that they have got quite a good set up down there,The under 21s are top of their table and the under 18 youth side reached the 3rd round proper of the FA Youth cup last night losing at home to Middlesbrough in front of a 1154 crowd.
I Agree with Chris though in that at the moment we are just an average mid table side, we beat the bottom sides but can't seem to beat the top sides.
Even if we win our games in hand we will still be 6 points behind Folkestone. The best we can hope for is a Play-Off place so hopefully we can start winning some of these games in hand and finish the season in a top 5 position!
I hear a lot of supporters comments such as "this wont happen overnight", "we are building for the future" "we are assembling a side to take us forward", "we are not a Folkestone yet" , as Dave has above. I may be completely wrong but are we building for the future or are we looking for a very quick promotion? I don't think signings such as Medlock, Attwood, Walder, Harris and Cole are signings for say a 3 year promotion plan. They do not come cheap and I believe they have been brought in for immediate success, anyone agree? if we finish mid table this season will all of those still be here next season as part of the building process? I doubt it.
Last season Dave Walters openly admitted to myself and other supporters that the budget was the biggest ever at the club and was based on the club getting immediate promotion. What happened was a disaster and probably sparked the beginning of the end for Dave. This year, under new directors, I for one never thought we would sign the players we have signed, particularly as I expected the budget to be nowhere near last seasons, which is of great credit to both them and the management team. I do not have the foggiest on what our playing budget is but I would hazard a complete guess, looking at the squad we have assembled, that it is pretty similar to last years. Because of this, I am guessing that the directors may be spending a bit more than they thought they would as they are gambling on immediate promotion. Again, maybe i am well wide of the mark and completely wrong but when i keep hearing these comments about building a squad to get out of this league in the next 2-3 years, I'm not so sure that is right. Looking at some of the jackets my old mate Dave O wears , I am not so sure we can sustain a budget like this to be able to spend 2-3 years building, especially if crowds are dropping. We are not promoting from the youth teams, which is usually part of a building process, and the signings we have made are surely based on immediate success.
Of course, its all guess work and I know as much as dave aa, and of course, who's to say we wont go on an incredible unbeaten run, win the league and crown Gary and Danny football genius's, but as for building for the future and happy with a mid table finish, i cannot agree with that and would be amazed if both the directors and management team do either.
think the mans years in the game as manager and knowledge of non lg means something chris whatever you may think of him he has had good success at higher level, got to give it time yea if it dos'nt work then so be it but let the bloke have a chance otherwise its back to change the manager because we haven't got instant success.
This management team have only failure to their names, so no that doesn't give me confidence. As said before the success was Wilson, greenwood and lightwood. Johnw agree this years team has been built for instant success and a playoff place is the minimum expected.
totally agree with John. when you get in players like we have that are proven it is like we try to buy the league and anything other than promotion this season is huge failure. if you want to build for future then invest in decent coaches and do it how burgess hill and worthing have and are doing making sure kids in youth set up get best coaching posible. last season was a huge failure and look like the same could happen this season. not sure if money from the cup run 3 years ago is all gone now but if it aint and we dont go up this season or next it is going to be hard in future to get out of this league or if we do get promoted survive in prem with crowds falling like they are. in terms of football some has been better this season but ther was good games last year such as home to gurnsey and burgess hill and great performance at faversham. all those were very good teams but the memorable games for me this season apart from crawley are chipstead and south park and those 2 teams was so bad. so how much better are we really and with players we have thought we would be scoring lot more goals an did not think we would have lost more than a third of our league games. i think garry was a great appointment but as people say to me he only ever had success at eastbourne borough with i think it is nick greenwood and guess garry took lot of credit when it was nick that was real mastermind and all garry has now is bloor and light that cant live up to what garry had at eastbourne.
would be daft to disagree with any of that john of course I would be estactic with promotion and if your putting a lot of money into something you want returns, wasnt thinking of the whole picture more of lets keep a manager long enough to build.
On the time and building question anyone seen what the new manager at Hythe Town has done since he joined the club on I am sure a lot less money? Bottom 3 when he joined (p11 w9 d1 l1 f 24 a6 since). Anyone seen what the new Ramsgate joint managers has done since joining? came 21st last year, just above us (currently 3rd). Anyone seen what the new Carshalton manager has done this season? came 20th last season (currently 5th).
I do really hope we are talking about Gary in the same light very soon and really think he will 'live or die' on the results over the next month or so. We have all commented on how well we do against the lesser sides and looking at the fixtures we have coming up I would say all of these are winnable with this Saturday looking the toughest of the lot.
