Disappointing no doubt not to hold on to the win against 10 men. 2nd half you would have thought it was the other way round in all honesty but at least we have the chance on tues to correct it. Both red card and pen correct IMO looking at the video.
disappoiting day all round united throw away a win and england then do it in rugby. as to herne bay they deserve to get a replay thought over 90 mins they much better side and even though they play a lot of game with 10 men they was far more threatening. some good saves by Pells kept us in it but as dan says certainly a penalty and herne bay got what they deserve. overall another poor performance great strike from Cole but not much else to get excited about and the tactics need changing quickly. playing against 10 men should be just keep the ball simple passing but our inability to keep ball meant herne bay dominated 2nd half and we never make extra man count.
Interesting to see Herne Bay managers thoughts on our style of play. With the quality of player we have at the club I really don't understand why we keep playing this way.
“Hastings surprised me today, they seemed very direct, just wanting to get the ball up front to Jack Harris for him to win knockdowns”, said Denly, “second half, we got the ball down, we started playing. We played good football, we were sharper, getting in and around them, getting wide, and for me, it was a complete performance second half”.

Agree, you would think that with Cole and Okoh in the squad you would be keen to get crosses in from the flanks, near post for Billy or back post for Jack with Sammy and Tom picking up any second balls and firing them back in.
To be fair Chris, I think everyone is in total agreement about the way we are playing and our long ball tactics. I think you got stick from some for suggesting a possible managerial change.
Direct football actually can be exciting to watch IMO but for me tends to involve fast wingers getting the balls down the flanks in advanced positions and getting crosses in for the strikers. Was just agreeing with the Herne bay comment that the emphasis on Sat by us was straight down the middle to Harris. Our goal came from a very direct passage of play in fact but was an incredible strike in the end.
I just think we should stick with the standard 442 for a while and get used to it and make others react to us and our strengths.
I agree with Dan that an effective long ball game can be attractive to watch. Years ago I watched (the old) Wimbledon at Plough Lane for a season or two in the early eighties. They played a very quick long ball game to usually two central strikers and on the small playing surface it worked to the complete bemusement of many opponents. I - and many others - certainly enjoyed it!
Unfortunately, we are yet to show we can play long ball effectively. It is not an easy option. It requires accuracy , fitness, speed and above all team discipline.
We really have to sort out what pattern we are going to go with. I'm quite happy if we stick with a passing game; but it really is a sorry matter that we so easily revert to a 'lump it up and hope for the best' approach when we get knocked out of our stride. That is not an effective long ball game and it's boring and frustrating to watch. As always though I want to reiterate that we must support the management team. I hope we get a win tomorrow with whatever team and tactics those in control choose to put out. The FA cup is important for the money it brings in and the impetus and enthusiasm it creates. We need all of that. Let' hope for the best!
I have to agree with Doeboy and isn't this indicative of English football? Cant stand the long ball game and find it boring to watch. It's okay if you don't have the players but we do. We have so much talent in the side I just don't understand why we play this way especially as Harris and Atwood are not great at holding up the ball. After going through my coaching badges over the years it's certainly not something the Fa coaches teach you and they are very much against this style of play. I would certainly not encourage any of my youth players to play this way And I'm happy to say that the Hastings youth teams we encounter do not play this style either.

im with doeboy and john. we cant pass 5 yards so to hit it long and expect to find our player all it does is give the ball away and we then come under pressure. watched a few games at lewes when wilson and bloor there and they had same style but thought only option cos of players they had there. like john says we have players that are better than that and management really need to start realise it cos at the moment the football is bad as it ever been and it will not increase crowds but turn people away cos dont agree with Dan and Geoff it is not exciting to watch. I did enjoy saturday partly watching herne bay play football and use the pitch rather than just lumping it forward.
think 442 is safe and players know their jobs and it allows the team more flexibility to vary play using wings and being more direct at times to keep oppo guessing. we are so one dimensional that easy for teams to work us out then defend narrow and stop us being a threat. if we dont change our style soon then not sure how much more i will want to watch and be glad i never bought a season ticket. but is it all wilson and bloor know? if it is then they need to get rid of players and bring new in that can play like that. hope we play something tomorrow but dont think i will make game but hope i read that we have won playing more expansive football
Long ball game is for lesser teams in any division to try and disrupt and to get ball forward quickly as its the only way to get it forward.
We have good players but an awful team, the manager in my eyes hasn't a clue about assembling a balanced squad, we have wide players but because our centre forwards are weak in the air, crossing to their heads is not an option. This immediately causes a problem as the wide men cant do what they want to do, if we are paying big money to our strikers perhaps we need to play to their strengths not their weaknesses.
For those who think Wilson is a good manager look at his recent record without Dean Lightwood and tell me what you see, I know what I see very little and disgruntled fans. What makes this all the more disappointing is most of us expected a lot more this season but its been as bad, the only reason we have done slightly better is we have better players, I don't believe any manager could have done worse with the players and resources available.
It's not often that I fundamentally disagree with ChrisB but I do now. It's only 6 months since we nearly went down. We have a new structure, a new team and that will take time to all come together. I know our expectations are high and given the squad we have, quite rightly so. We have to be a bit patient as hard as that may be. Give Garry and Danny time. We got nowhere criticising then sacking manager after manager and using loads of players. As to long ball, I suggest Chris looks around the leagues, 'cos you do not get out of many leagues playing pretty tap-tap football. The best teams mix it up. I saw a team on Saturday that are high up in League One and they could pass it but had more success sticking it in the channels although they only played with 1 up. They won.
Surly we got to get Okoh back in squad tonight,
What would everyone choose as there starting 11 tonight
Mine would be
Pelling
Crabb Rowe Ray hall
Okoh Adams cruttwell Cole
Medlock Harris/attwood
I would be pretty happy with that line up steve but the wingers need to get the ball often in danger areas and get crosses in constantly. ( both high back post and cut backs towards the 6 yard box ) hence my direct wing play preference ( not to be confused with long ball to the strikers cutting out the whole midfield ) Getting it wide allows time for one of the two central Mids to move up offer support or get on the cutbacks as well as picking up loose balls that get headed out.
At this level fairly simple football is the most effective IMO as its more the lack of time allowed for coaching ( 1 session a week ) rather than a players ability that is the main issue in not implementing more intricate possession based styles. Get your shape sorted so people know their jobs and encourage good work rate and things will fall into place.
But to play the long ball game you need a 9 who is good in the air, to provide the knockdowns for the 10, we don't have such a player, and I think we can all see that, except our manager
Its nice to have a good friendly debate on her for once with lots of differing opinions. I think lots of people have made very good points and of course there is always a place and a time for long ball as long as you do have a good number 9 that can do the holding up job. I just think, as already stated, with the undoubted talent we have in the team, when we go down this road, we level the playing field and get dragged down to other teams ability. There is no better example I can give than our game against Carshalton this season on a beautiful Pilot Field pitch ideal for passing. Don't mean to be disrespectful but you only had to look at the two overweight lumps they had at centre back that day. It was absolutely clear from the first minute they were not mobile at all and fast quick passing and movement was the order for the evening. But from the first to the last minute we hoofed it straight on their heads and we made them look magnificent, it was exactly what they would have wanted. In fact their 18 stone captain was MOM and didn't lose an aerial battle all night. For me, this was a time when the long ball game should not have been implemented and we should have had a plan B when we knew things were not working. You cannot tell me Carshalton had better players on the field that night than we did.
I think at the same time we need to put things in perspective. We have been very poor at times, particularly at home, but the fact is if we win our 2 games in hand we could quite possibly move into the top 6 one point behind 2nd place. We have an excellent chance to progress tonight in the FA Cup and are then one round away from the conference boys, we are though to the 2nd round of the league cup and have a very winnable game at Wroxham in the vase on Saturday. I bet teams like Lewes, Peacehaven, Horsham, Hythe and other Kent and Sussex teams would love to be struggling but still have all that in front of them.
I think Gary and Danny are the right guys to take us forward and little bit of tinkering with personnel and tactics and we will be alright. I don't always agree with our style of play and cant stand this 3-5-2 formation we play at times and to put possibly our most creative midfielder (Vickers) in defence on Saturday was a mistake but no one can dispute the signings they have made and given time I am confident they will find the right formula.
Cannot disagree with your team Steve but would imagine Gary will put Walder back in after his suspension for possibly Crutts. Unless he has some kind of on going injury I think it is also clear that Okoh is no longer fancied. I think he has played 4 games all season and been subbed in each and now appears to be an unused sub each game. Has probably more flair than anyone else in the team and still impresses me when he does play but not sure what's happening there.
Herne Bay travel to The Pilot Field on Tuesday evening for an Emirates FA Cup 2nd Round Qualifying replay against Hastings United after the two sides drew 1-1 at The Altira Park Stadium on Saturday.
Ahead of the game, speaking to Peter Guise, Herne Bay manager Sam Denly said, "We've got to start the game better, we were outstanding in the second half in the first match, and we have to take that into the replay. I've said to the boys we've shown that we're more than capable so let's go there with that belief, that we can go down there and win the game and be in the next round. The draw is on Monday, what comes out of the hat might be an incentive but we want to be in the next round no matter who we get. The big guns are in there now so we want to get a nice draw. First and foremost let's just concern ourselves with Tuesday, let's go down there, have the belief that we can win the game and then we'll take it from there".
The draw for the 3rd Round Qualifying has been made by the FA on Monday and the winners of this tie will be at home to Poole Town from the Southern League (Premier Division) on Saturday 10th October.
Your right Steve. I was actually commenting on what I believe is our strongest 11 at any one time. Walder will be missing tonight as will Sam Hasler for Herne Bay. Unfortunately I believe their captain Liam Quinn and defender Harry Brown will be returning. They both got sent off against Rochester in the last round but believe both are back tonight making them even stronger than the first game.
Suspensions do not kick in until 14 days after the offence at this level. Quinn is back, Walder and Hasler are available but Brown has one more game to serve so will be missing. Its all on thefa.com website.
