Terry White steps down- CONFIRMED
Permalink

The Club regrets to confirm that Terry White tendered his resignation from his role as First Team Manager at the Pilot Field following yesterday evening's 3-0 reverse against Tooting & Mitcham United.

United's second home defeat in the space of little more than forty-eight hours left them languishing in sixteenth place in the Division One South league table, already fifteen points behind unbeaten leaders Burgess Hill Town, and with pre-season title aspirations looking sadly forlorn.

After succeeding John Maggs in the managerial hotseat in January 2014, White led the U's to a fifth place finish, before an extra time defeat at Folkestone Invicta ended their season in the play-off semi-finals.

An experienced squad of players was then assembled over the summer, a group widely expected to mount a serious promotion challenge from the outset, but even though an inconsistent start was followed by a six match unbeaten run, last night's loss and abject performance signalled the end of White's tenure.

Nigel Kane, who managed United to play-off glory back in the 2006/07 campaign, and was recently installed as White's Assistant, will kindly take caretaker charge of First Team affairs for Saturday's FA Cup second qualifying round tie away to Grays Athletic, while the Club assesses its options going forward. Anyone wishing to apply for the position is invited to contact Chairman, Dave Walters, at the Club as soon as possible.

Just want to be the first to Thank Terry for his hard work and commitment, although it didnt quite work out, he was still the one that took the job after maggs when no one else wanted it. Was and all ways will be a Hastings legend and Hastings through and through! All the best for the future Terry!

Agree 100% , still a pity that someone from the club has to deal with this. But Terry seems to have no faith anymore.

Somehow strange that there is nowhere written a thank you.

Good Luck and Thank you !

Best of luck to Terry.
While I sometimes didn't agree with some of his decisions, I wish he had stayed.I don't think we can question his commitment and I think we all thought he had gathered a squad good enough to challenge for the title. OK, some weird things have happened, particularly when he's been under pressure but we have only recently produced two excellent away wins. I feel the players have a lot to answer for for what's gone on on the pitch.
Mistakes are forgivable, a poor attitude and effort is not.
So what happens now ?
I guess we'll continue with Nigel until another lucky candidate gets handed the poisoned chalice of managing HUFC.
Can we point the finger at DW ? Personally I don't think so. I bet we had one of the highest playing budgets of anyone in our league. Yet still we under achieve in a quite spectacular way. Just looking at the teams currently above us in our league is pretty sobering and, I guess, we all now are hoping for a cup run to lift the mood.....though I fear what follows may be a season of mediocrity.
Let's hope we see the PLAYERS react in the right way on Saturday.

Even if the club doesn't, the fans at Hastings would like to thank Terry for his contribution to the club, and to wish him all the best for the future.

Yes, a 'thank-you' in the club's statement would have appropriate rather than just a 'regrets to confirm'. I'm sorry it didn't work out for Terry; I'm sure too that all the supporters are appreciative of his efforts and undoubted commitment and wish him well.

As for the future; let's support NK (and in my view DW too); be as positive as we can; and hope that the club does as it has said and carefully reviews options before making longer term decisions

Thanks for the hard work and commitment you have shown to the club Terry, it's a shame that not all of the sqaud have followed your example. Not everything you tried worked but until Saturday it looked as if we had turned the corner. Good luck for the future.
Let's get behind Nigel on Saturday. Up the Us.

Still can't help thinking this has been a knee jerk reaction to TWO results.
Only a week ago everyone was feeling more positive after two excellent away wins and there were even rumours that some serious 'gelling' had started to occur.
Saturdays defeat was down to individual errors and on another day we would have got a result. Clearly Monday was a particularly 'bad day at the office' but EVERY club has a few of those a season.
Yes...our start to the season has been very disappointing......we have perpetually missed good chances and conceded soft goals......but I think for the manager to 'walk' (or be pushed) in September is not in the best interests of the club.

As far as I know it was Terry's decision to go. I think comments such as 'was he pushed' do no good to the club or individuals concerned.

Very sad that things haven't worked out for terry, whether they would have in time is academic now. Really wanted him to do well as a club legend.

Steve,
Don't misunderstand me, I wasn't saying Terry may actually have been pushed. What I meant was that whether it was the manager's decision ( as in this case) or whether he was sacked (as in plenty of other cases), September is just too early for it to happen.

People may think I am over the moon that Terry has gone but far from it. I wasn't against the idea of him taking over from John Maggs but not totally behind it either. Last season was okay and he did well to scrape us into the play offs without particularly playing great football but I went along with the theory that he needed time to make his own signings and a pre season to put his stamp on things. I supported this notion and was very confident, with the squad assembled, that he would succeed. Unfortunately it didn't work out and as already pointed out, I think he was badly let down by certain players although some of his tactics and decision were strange at times.

I genuinely take no pleasure in seeing Terry walk away from the job he loved and wish him all the best for the future. He is only young still and has plenty of time to come back elsewhere and become a successful manager.

We now all get behind Nigel and hope he can perform a miracle or two but sadly I think it could all be 'much of a muchness' and see a long long season ahead.

So the "blame the Manager" brigade have got their way yet again.

If we play rubbish and get stuffed on Saturday can we now expect calls to sack Nigel Kane to start !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear that the club are advertising the post - any Manager with any sense will look at our record of hiring and firing and stay well clear !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hammerfan: I do not think on this occasion there were calls either at Monday's game or on this forum to call for Terry to be sacked or even directly blamed. Of course a manager has responsibility for the actions of his team (particularly one created by himself); and there was certainly trenchant criticism of the team's performance on the night which - for the record - was shockingly bad. Others have pointed out that it was Terry's decision to go. I think all of us are very unhappy at the procession of managers we have had in recent years. But this time at least the evidence, such as it is, does not appear to support the view that Terry was driven out. Of course, he might choose to give his own account at some point in variance to that. But, in the absence of any comment from Terry that he was treated unreasonably, I really do not think it helps to suggest that potential managers should stay clear of our club.

Agreed, not sure about 'blame the manager brigade', I think the players have deservedly received more criticism than Terry lately. Would you have honestly continued with him Roy after Mondays performance and the fact that he had won less than 50% of the games he had taken charge off since last year? How much longer do you think he should have been given? Had DW not given him all the tools to build a successful squad? Unfortunately, at all levels of football from County league to Premiership the buck, wrongly or rightly, stops with the manager.

As Terry resigned does that mean the rest of the back room staff are remaining? Is Stapes now Nigel's assistant? Is John Masters staying? Does Nigel now bring in his own team?

The whole point is that you can not build a team if you change the manager every 6 months !

Its the same every time all the talk on here of Manager loosing the dressing room etc unless you are a player how do you know ?

Not on the same level but the principal is the same, where would Manchester United be if they had sacked Alex Ferguson during the first 5 years of his reign ?

I know some supporters would like one or two of the current squad to go, however do we know of any players that have decided to leave due to Terry not being in charge.

Not that i am aware of though believe Nigel was talking to them individually last night and today. Would be dissapointed if any left directly due to this as believe they mostly have a point to prove.

I've deliberately not commented so far this season on the team or Manager because I was always of the view that TW had the best intentions but enjoyed being part of the team rather than managing the players. I also felt that at the latter part of last season that an element of favouritism had crept in with 'being one of the boys' clouding judgement on playing decisions.

Like everyone else I had high hopes having seen the squad assembled pre-season. On occasions this squad has shown it can play well but the desire isn't there to make it happen every week.
