Wondered when Phil might start this thread.. :) TBH generally we have had a huge amount of very postive feedback and some people who are really into their programmes and buy every issue have emailed and tweeted regularly after games and mentiond that they thought it was pretty good and have offered to help contribute towards it as well which is great and also some constructive critisism which we positivly encourage.

I think we're 6 programmes into this now of something that neither Liam or myself have any experince of whatsoever but we do certainly have lots of enthusiasm.
Yes there have been mistakes and errors, some down inexperience and not haveing the eye for proofreading 100% as yet, some dowm to some very tight deadlines ( for instance we had 5 hours straight to write from scratch the Folkestone issue due to a unfortunate personal circumstance at another end and didnt even know if the game was on until 4.45PM on the Saturady with the deadline early the next morning, worked until midnight on that and met the deadline ), Also at this level some of the clubs ( not all ) provide little in the way of player details and background which makes it very difficult to produce detailed info on their squad.

We're not experienced programme editors and dont claim to be and trust me no-one is more pissed off with ourselves more than when after checking and checking the thing little errors pop up.

We alsways knew that Simon would be an exceptionally hard act to follow as he has had around 7 seasons worth of expereince editoring it and we have had just 6 matches so far.

As Fatbloke mentions we are encouraged that sales are actually up on last years matches with around 100 or so sold each match which we are very happy with.

Two things we cannot really change is the fact it is black and white and the number of adverts which generlly as you can imagine contribute vital funds to the club but additionally there are several more league sponsor ads etc that the club is onliged to carry ( particularly full page adds ) However eventually we would like to add possible another 4 sides of content by adding two more pages so we can include more items on a regular basis like Ryman League Round Up, more interviews and colums from NLP etc. )

The club have had quotes on producing it full colour but it is much more expensive to produce one thsi big in full colour and this was probably proved by the fact that the Walton Casuals programme the other day was indeed colour but was just 8 pages long for the same cost of £2.... wheras ours is 56 pages albeit in B&W

Anyway we will continue to try our best and learn from any errors and mistakes and are sure that as we gain experience we will be producing better programmes that improve week after week until one day we might get nearly as good as Simon!

Some of the new features such as 5 from a fan have been particularly well recived from the people that mention it but we actually need people like PhilG to contribute their experimces to it to make it interesting!

As Simon mentoned to me its a tough job to do and very easy to criticise but not so easy for someone to take up the challenge to do it as the role of programme editor was advertised for over 2 months with no responses before we decided to take over from Simon of what was becoming a job too far for someone who puts most of his waking moments into the club.

Massive thanks to the 100 or so that buy them each week and as always look forward to hearing your 'constructive' thoughts on them and can promise that we're always looking to make each one better than the last.

Cheers

Yes, and by the amount that are sold, so do a lot of other people. Value for money is good and content is good. Obviously a lot of work goes into it this from VOLUNTEERS and from people who have full time jobs. Now that I have said my piece, I will be more than interested in the replies.

Both you and Liam are doing a great job Dan. Keep up the good work.
If I may just put a small footnote we are lately finding it hard to get people to go onto the rota to put the programmes together. There are currently 4 'teams' of volunteers who put the programme together but from time to time due to work and other commitments it can often end up being just 1 or 2 people carrying out the task, if you think you would be able to spare an hour on either a Monday morning about 11.30am or on. Friday evening from around 6.30pm we'd appreciate it if you could either have a chat with Simon on match days or even send me a private message on here.

Many thanks.

Of course there will be teething problems and typos etc as Dan says - they are both new to the game and trying to edit and proof read in too narrow a time margin . What I like is the fact that they are both keen on getting better and each programme reflects that. When I think of away programmes - don't think they match up to ours at all. They may be glossy but have precious little content. Even taking our ads out there is a sizeable amount of reading matter - much more than others .

I did receive some constructive feedback on Monday which I will share with Dan but all in all I think it's a good read.

Totally agree Pat. i know I wouldn't be able to do such a good job giving their situation and especially with Dan having a hell of a long day with work and Liam being a full time student. I take my hat off to you lads well done.

Think it's crap and needs spicing up! Chris B should take over in futurebiggrin We should have a Dear Deidrie type column with Pat sorting out supporters sexual problems and how about Mystic Rimmer reading the stars. Just a couple of ideas (Great job really Dan)

Chris B is not getting involved in this topic as he doesn't buy programmes any more. But i will not criticise someone who does things as a volunteer.

Of course we are straying a bit from the original question. Phil - you started the thread so I'm sure we would all like to hear your views as well.

Would be delighted to also have you aboard Si!

In the last couple of issues we have used credited snatches of your ghostof site which certainly were a popular feature so would be great to have the main man from it contributing :)

I helped David Bealey out for several years with the programme up till the 02/03 season. We prided ourselves on getting an up to date programme out every time - and the same applies ten years on in that an up to date b&w prog is always better than a glossy prog that doesn't have previous weekend's results etc. Dan and Liam are doing their best and I know what it's like to be burning that midnight oil! With practice comes finesse as the editors and readers will find.

I did offer to carry on with my programme contributions when the Walters regime took over, but to say that my offer was received in a luke warm way is no understatement. If Dan and Liam would like a contribution or two I'll be happy to oblige - maybe something on the blast from the past theme which seems to have gone down well?

Ok. Tooting on Saturday is a tad difficult now - so let me cobble together something for the Horsham game on the 19th?

That would be great SS, by the time you see this Tooting's deadline would have gone anyway :)

Due to the printing deadlines We would require any contributions for Saturdays programmes by the Thursday before 12pm ( midday ) and for Mondays by Midday on the Sunday

As well as SS's new item another feature that will be making its debut in the programme tonight will be a Fan's All Time Hastings team.

Roy Gannon is up first tonight and his team would definatly be one to beat!

If you would like to have a go yourself please email your 1 - 16's ( Subs dont have to be included if you dont want to! )

To be fair that comment sat there on its own for about a week before Phil ( who rightly talks to me face to face about what he'd like to see and I've acted on several of his suggestions already such as font size etc ) replied.

I said from day one on here that we will look to improve over the season as we learn the ropes and to his credit Phil acknowledged that. Although when the programme has never been in colour quite why anyone has decided that this year it should have happened I'm not quite sure of.... Albeit I think a lot of people would be happy with just one particular advert page in colour anyway! :)

However even Simon Rudkins has admitted he has never had anything like 10 home matches in a row and it's pretty obvious that this is a very difficult situation to cope with as first timers on a programme especially with Monday matches giving us a few spare hours to write up the programme after a Sat game.

We have had far more positive comments than negatives ones both in the flesh and in here plus sales are significantly up from last year so generally happy and looking to keeping improving with experience!

I cant believe people are still having a go about the programme....even this week on the OAMs (other) forum someone is still having a dig !! For crying out loud these guys are just volunteers, sometimes with very little time to compile. It must be an absolute nightmare trying to get everything together at the best of times, let alone when there are ten home games on the bounce ...Yes there are lots adverts ...amazingly thats what helps bring in extra money....so why spend that money on colour pages ? And there will be mistakes, ITS CALLED A LEARNING CURVE ! Get real and give credit where its is due....and please stop bloody moaning !!!

ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE !!!!!

Its a learning curve, and fair play to them at least its getting done. Perhaps if someone who criticises, would like to proof read it, then it may well improve further.

Haven't seen the comment Windy, but thank you. Once again, if anything has anything to say, please email Dan or myself, because what's the point of moaning about something that can be changed if you tell us?! Thank you ChrisB also.

Keep up the good work lads. It's pretty obvious that due to the cost of ink alone which is pound for pound more expensive than Gold that it just wouldn't be viable to do. Its so very easy to critisise people however i believe if you're not prepared to help out then either offer constructive feedback or none at all.

I finally attended my first ever game after many months working on Saturdays. of a mess. {so thought I would pitch in on this subject. I find it hard to understand why anyone would be so critical of the programme. I think it is a really good read - and I like a lot to read in my programme; if I had one criticism, and it might be just my particular copy but the centre spread with all the previous line-ups and results could look better with the first column not wide enough for the date and it all looking slightly like the blotting paper wasn't applied to the ink before turning over. However that really is a minor point.

What would I like more of? Probably a bit more context about the league and the players elsewhere in the division. An expanded version of Ryman South News would cover it. I am guessing quite a few would appreciate how any Saturday's fixtures fits into the context of the division. Who the best players are in the league and when are they coming to PF

Hi Sedlescome, thanks for your feedback. think we've addressed your comments already in in this weeks upcoming programme on which i spent around 4-5 hours on sunday alone working on things including the centre pages and added alot more info on events in the Ryman league south, transfers etc and a general revamp of margins, getting things inline etc. should look a lot more pro this week.

Cheers

Dan
