All the recent hype about a quick return to the Ryman Premier is IMO totally misguided given the quality of the squad being assembled. I see from today's Observer that Sean is "made up" with the squad & therefore not actively looking to recruit. So where is a striker (ideally two) of Ade's quality? Has Kenny Poge suddenly improved significantly? Has Tim discovered how to pass the ball to one of our side? Is the junior Woodley fit? etc. etc.
I hope to be proved wrong, but unless DW is prepared to loosen the purse strings I see us being doomed to a considerable period at a lower level, with steadily reducing numbers of supporters.
come on chaps you've seen one very one sided friendly so far and 20 different players, you've only mentioned past players that you don't think are up to the job but what about the shonk lad is he not capable to score goals and bailo needs a good start and im sure he will deliver and also the number 12 that came on for the last 25 minutes the other night I thought he alone changed the game a little bit but lacked support up with him.
The similarities between what is happening now and what happened ten years ago continue to grow.
Following the excitement of Hendon/Kettering/Stevenage our league season fell apart and despite desperately bringing in loan players, the inevitable relegation followed. All the best players departed and we were left with a very poor side that struggled in a low quality league the following season.
Substitute Bishops Stortford/Harrogate/Middlesbrough for the thee names above and this perfectly describes where we are now and where we appear to be heading.
So if history continues to repeat itself we will have a good few years in the doldrums as we slowly begin to assemble enough decent players to challenge for a promotion.
At our level , building a decent squad is like rolling a ball of string. Progress is always painfully slow, but if you drop it (get relegated) the whole thing totally unravels and you have to start again from scratch. That's pretty well where we are now !

Not forgetting a change of chairman that's imminent!
You are right Sindy that I only mentioned my fears regarding some of the players that I believe may not be good enough, but unless our management intend to at least TRY to sign a few with the inspirational talents of a Bradley Goldberg, or a Harry Beautyman, then we had better be prepared to accept mediocre results from a mediocre team.
I accept that there is a balance between overpaying some players more money, at worst thereby causing unsustainable debt, or spending sufficient to provide a team that will be able to mount a challenge for promotion, while retaining or better still increasing the number of supporters & income.
You may not agree with my views, but as Mick has said in his post, we have seen pretty well the same situation before & the thought of an elongated stay at the lower level is not attractive.
On a personal note: I have been following Hastings Town/Hastings United teams since about 1948, & posting on the supporter's Forum for several years. Can anyone explain why I have suddenly been demoted from Veteran/Senior Member to Newbie!!
Can anyone explain why Jamie Crellin switched to Worthing? Worthing, hardly a massive team. That is worrying that he saw that as better option than staying put. I like Sean Ray as a player and he appears to be a nice chap, but as manager? Hastings are going backwards rapidly and its worrying to see where its going to end up. I now live in Crawley and so read about the local teams up here and seems that even Crawley Down are starting to sign some decent players, more so then us. I am looking forward to watching the away games against CDG, Three Bridges, Burgess Hill and Horsham. But reading local press, I am not so much now as I can't see us even being able to beat half of these. Burgess Hill, have just signed Paul Armstrong from Whitehawk and whilst he is now ageing its still more exciting than anyone we have signed. What is going on down there and why have half the team left. I've not heard anything about Armstrong-ford, where has he gone? Our team now compared to last year looks weak. I was exciting about the start of the season, now it approaches rapidly and I think Hastings aren't going to be anywhere near the promotion spots. I hope Razor proves me wrong.
Liam Baitup has just signed for Eastbourne Town. Top goal scorer in County League netting 39 last season, & Steve Harper has also signed for Folkestone. Did we try to sign them or did DW think that they were too expensive?
after a lot of phone calls and investigation I have finally found out who the number 12 was on Tuesday his name is Jamie crone from little common he scored 29 goals last season in county and missed the last 11 games through injury apparently sean has approached him before over the last 2-3 years but he has stayed loyal to his home club and he is only 18 that doesn't sound bad to me, if he and bailo could link together and get proper service I reckon the grass can get get greener if they both sign but I heard there is a lot of interest in him so hopefully we don't muck up and lose another
Croney is a good prospect, previously with Brighton & Hove Albion as a kid he had trials with Crawley and Leyton Orient at the beginning of last season before getting injured, of course the question is whether scoring 29 goals at SCL2 will translate well to Ryman south but as he's 18 there's only one way to find out. Give him game time.
Just because a player is from SCL doesn't automatically make him not good enough to step up, look at Danny Ellis for example, playing at SCL2 with Bexhill then steps up to a Ryman Prem and becomes our player of the year! So it can happen in certain cases.
Would defiantly like some players with higher level experience to come in though.
