From the BBC website :

Southern League club AFC Totton are on the verge of liquidation.

Totton, who in the 2011/12 season earned more than £100,000 from reaching the second round of the FA Cup, are now nearly £200,000 in debt and have not paid their players since January

Shows how an FA cup windfall can be squandered - and the importance of balancing the books.

Very true Dave, these days £100,000 isn't a great deal of money, don't get me wrong I wouldn't complain if it fell my lap but realistically it doesn't go a long way.

Talking of FA cup money seems that Guernsey may not be entering the Cup..........http://nonleague.pitchero.com/news/guernseys-fa-cup-future-in-jeopardy-23331/

Maybe all those who keep going on about the way the club is run should think very carefully whether they want a senior football club in Hastings or would rather see us in administration or bankruptcy. I have no financial interest in HUFC but have supported and carried out voluntary work since moving to Hastings in 1987. I am sure that the constant negativity on this forum is a factor in players not wanting to stay or come to the cub, who would want to play for supporters that slag you off all the time.

I absolutely agree with Father Xmas and HastingsLion. There are always those who think that the money will somehow take care of itself. It will not. It is very easy to criticise those who run clubs for 'lack of ambition'; but football at all levels demonstrates that disaster lurks around the corner for those who out of over optimism or pressure from disgruntled supporters go on an unsustainable spending spree. I am very anxious that if things don't go as well as some might hope at the start of the coming season that there will be calls to immediately spend more of the 'cup money'; take on new players, etc. The comments above re. Totton are entirely relevant to that. What might seem a lot of money can disappear very very quickly if the players' wage bill becomes excessive.

It cannot help either as FatherXmas says, if we are over critical of individual players. Of course, the forum should be an honest expression of view; but much of football is about confidence. Will what we say help or hinder the player's performance..........

You reap what you sow, Walters and Ray between them have sown chaos, indiscipline, bad management, and arrogance. This has now materialised into relegation, the best thing these 2 can do is leave the club as soon as possible in Rays case, and Walters please put the club up for sale at a fair price, and hopefully a buyer will come forward, as we supporters in the vast majority are saying enough is enough.

My next post will be when a new manager is appointed.

Are you coming back next season?

Also the forum is visited by around 250 approx unique people per day on average so not too shabby :)

Father Xmas I would think being publicly humiliated by your manager in the press is more likely to put players off signing, rather than a forum read by few and offending even fewer.

I had to break my word as I couldn't believe someone would write such rubbish, if a player won't sign for a club because of a forum he would be gutless and lacking spine, and do you want that sort of player in your club. You might have 250 viewers but less than 50 will post.
Yes I will be back.

Haven't ever come across a fans forum that doesn't criticize its players/manager/owners. Players don't have to read them but I would imagine some do without ever taking them seriously. As to finances and lack of ambition I don't think Hastings will ever do well in the Ryman Premier with our present ownership setup. I don't see how enough money could be generated to propel Hastings up the non league pyramid competing with clubs with stronger financial backing. We should be able to be reasonably competitive in the Ryman South and stay in the black, but that may have to be the extent of our ambition.

Who is going to provide the money to change the setup. How much would fans be prepared to pay to see promotion, a lot of people who post on here have complained about paying a tenner to get in and we had a lot of posts last season comparing prices with other clubs. Non league football is not profitable and I am glad that we still have a team to support.

Why would a player be gutless and lacking spine if he chose to sign for another club that didn't have supporters who get on the players backs. If both were offering a similar deal that could be the clincher, no one wants to be rubbished for doing their best.

No one goes out to work to do a bad job, if you give your best whilst doing that then its obvious to me that if people constantly get on your back and continue to put you down then it would certainly make me doubt plying my trade at that particular place or somewhere else if given the choice.

The only clubs that don't have negatives from their fans are those without fans. If you as an individual are so weak to let a few people on a forum dictate where you play then you are pathetic, your attitude should be I will show them.
On my other point which you have chosen to ignore (I wonder why), do you not think being publicly slammed in the local paper is more damming and humiliating?

Hastings lion if your point is valid how come people still work in the NHS, for the Council, on the railways, in Banks etc what a daft point to put forward.

We've advertised for people interested in becoming part of the commitee on here, the main site and the FB page over the last month or so and had a total of 4 people reply in total which a bit dissapointing so was hoping to see a few more people show an interest before arranging a venue etc.

It is very likely though ( confirmed yesterday ) that the meeting will be on Tuesday 9th at 6.30pm at the clubhouse.

Would you be intersted in getting involved?

Maybe because the majority of those people work for a bigger employer than a non league football club and posts on forums with the majority of those concerned in those major companies isn't deemed as being as personal as those being posted on here.

Now in my opinion you're the one who is posting a daft point for putting a non league football club in the same bracket as those you've mentioned.

There have been long term supporters, prepared to invest serious money in the football club, around for several years. They, not unreasonably, expected to have a say in the club's affairs had a deal been done - but Mr Walters has always preferred to do things his way.

Semi pro football is particularly fragile these days - big bucks today - poverty tomorrow (wait for the Whitehawk bubble to burst) but while there is lots to be said for a prudent approach, it is most frustrating that potential investment by a group of dedicated supporters, as opposed to Mark Gardiner who threw money around and then bailed out, is denied to the club.

Had those people got involved, I'm sure the ludicrous appointment of Neville Southall wouldn't have happened, that the supporters' committee wouldn't have resigned en mass, that the likes of John Lambert would still be involved and that those supporters who no longer attend games would still be Pilot Field regulars.

As for stuff on here re how players perform etc, this forum is no different from any other in that respect. If a player is that much a shrinking violet that he doesn't want to play (any more:*) because of criticism, informed or not, then he should be doing something else on Saturday afternoons. That's how it is and so long as it doesn't get nasty or personal, then they should just get on with it.

Whatever, welcome back to Terry White and here's to United making a decent fist of a division with a lot of local fixtures. 13/14 looks to be an interesting season in Ryman South. Go for it, Sean and Tel.

Re the Supporters Club, where is it?  There was supposed to be a meeting to reform but it hasn't happened.  If there are that many people interested why haven't they been helping with work on the ground during the close season?  A Supporters Club is not just for match days, it's 12 months of the year.

What's the constitution, shouldn't there be an AGM if it still exists?  Looks like it's not going to happen, what a surprise.

SS is making some very good points in his post. I think a number of supporters feel the same way. As to negative posts on a fans forum it would be incredibly boring without them. However, perhaps the club could set up a "Happy Clappy" alternative fans forum with only nice postings allowed. Players of a sensitive nature could then access this site.

Im not saying that you shouldn't post what you feel on here, my point is that constant moaning at players/management and indeed having a go at others who help run the club would eventually give those concerned a negative attitude, and I'm sure that you would feel the same, that certainly isn't the way to get the best outof someone is it!
I don't know the full story regards the group of supporters investing in the club so it wouldn't be right for me to comment, but I do agree that, I too think Whitehawk is an accident waiting to happen so it'll be interesting to see what happens there. It does make me wonder how clubs can getaway with living above their means so to speak and some continuing trading with such huge debts such as Carshalton.

And some would argue that David Walters having a totally unjustified pop in a programme several seasons ago at the then supporters' committee was an appalling thing to do. The result was that group of people who for many years had given their time to Town and then United called it a day. There is of course a big difference between them and the situation raised earlier about comments re players.

And for all the issues raised and relegation, United can boast of pretty good levels of support that many clubs will envy. Clubs with big debts? Nature will take it's course as it has at Truro, Kettering, Rushden & Diamonds, AFC Totton and many more. Another bubble bursting prediction - Boreham Wood. How long can gates of 200 sustain the squad they have in the higher reaches of Conference South?

Just so frustrating that a group of individuals who have followed football at the Pilot Field for many years and were prepared to invest and run affairs prudently have not been able to get involved. That combined with what has been done well in the current era - floodlight renewal for example - could have seen United playing Conference South football.

But Hastings Lion why won't you comment on the manager slating players in the press, one can only assume you think it is ok,

SS. Boreham Wood are probably being financed by Arsenal Ladies who use the ground.

In all honesty I never read the comments that you are talking about so I can't comment on them. Believe that or not but its the truth.

So hypothetically if a manager slammed his player in the press, would you think it's more or less likely to deter a player from signing than a few negative comments on a forum?

Re. Chris' point: for my part; it's all the same. I would expect anyone; be they manager, owner, supporter, or whatever, to hesitate long and hard before criticising another at a personal level. Ill judged and hasty criticism (particularly when it's in print or text) can cause rancour that can sour relationships for years. At the end of the day all of those who contribute to this forum are supposed to be 'supporters'; and those associated with the club who write to the press or for the programme must be presumed to have the best interests of the club at heart. A good test for all before pressing the send button is to ask whether what is said will actually support the club or hinder it!

Re. SS's point on individual's who might have made an investment in the club; as a relatively new supporter, I simply do not know the ins and outs of any of that. I agree though very much with what he has to say about the finanicial fragility of non league football; and it is for that reason that I welcome the financial prudence shown by the present management. How to we actually deveope within those constraints? (Tim's point some postings above) - there is no easy answer to that, other than to seek the maximum amount of co-operation of all those who have a shared interest in the club (and of the town).

There are 2 main ways to have financial issues at any level, spend what you haven't got, and alienating your customers, I think the past few years have led to the latter being an increasing issue.

Chris, I agree with your general point above entirely; and undoubtedly some issues over recent years could have been better handled. The public exchanges with the local Council spring to my mind - although quite where blame might lay in that regard is something I cannot judge. What is welcome is the tone and content of the recent announcements re. season tickets and player news on the main club website. Of course, there will be those who might disagree with the detail of that; but at least there is information being given out and an explanation of the policies being pursued.
