Was talking with Phil G at Hythe on Tuesday night, and he asked what was my oldest football programme. I my reply was Chelsea v Hastings & St. Leonards 24th March 1906. I said I would post it on here for him to see.
Sadly it is only a reprint and not the genuine article, but still very interesting. This is NOT the Hastings & St. Leonards that became Hastings Town and now Hastings United. They were still known as Rock-A-Nore in 1906. I have added a bit of info borrowed from Leon's Hastings Football History website, so you can get your heads around it.
Absolutely brilliant stuff Vernon, can you get me a couple of tickets for Australia, could do with a holiday. I suppose however that £16 was a lot of money in those days.
One other point which hopefully somebody can answer. I notice that the Chelsea team are just surnames whereas the Hastings side include their initials. Did that imply that the Chelsea side were professionals and we were Amateurs ? I know they did that with cricket teams but did it also occur in football ?
