Hastings United have used just like many sports associations in the town the Hastings Coat of Arms. Today we announce a brand new image that underlines our intentions, our culture and the feel of the club moving forward.
With Hastings United using the coat of arms the unique identity of the club was always in question in both a commercial and marketing aspect but most importantly the old design left us vulnerable on copyright issues. This change signals our intent to increase awareness of Hastings United and boost our marketing activity both locally and across the footballing landscape, with the new badge designed to represent the three lions on the coat of arms uniting together as one.
Billy Wood, CEO: “This is a big day in the history of Hastings United, something we all have been working towards, a decision and move not taken lightly, but one that was necessary to grow our club in the manner it deserves.
When we analysed what we needed to do, we grasped the feeling among the town and supporters as of late. We believe that for the first time in a long time the unique sense of pride, passion and purpose across the board, staff, volunteers, management, coaches, players and supporters is overwhelming and we wanted a badge that represented that.
The concept was determined from looking at the coat of arms and saying what do the three lions represent to us? We broke it down as supporters, staff and players, with the sense of unity that lifts up this place on match days we wanted to show all those elements uniting to create ONE. That one powerful image is our message to our community, our message that together we are stronger and together we will take this club onwards and upwards."
Agree completely, love the tradition of using the town badge. I wondered if this was down to me becoming an old git but my sons prefer the original too
Agree with everyone else. Tradition is very important in football. Clubs that change names, colours and badges have no respect for the history of the club. Poor mis guided decision and bad that the club felt the need to distance itself from the town it represents. Not too late surely for a U turn?
I also had to ask myself the question "Is it because I'm getting old that I don't like the new badge." However it's definitely not that.
I think I actually may have been a bit more in favour if I had just read "we are modernising our image" rather than the rather contrived explanation/justification given.
I'm really not sure how a change of badge is "necessary to grow our club in the manner it deserves". Necessary? Why ?
I really can't see how a change from the town's traditional and historic coat of arms to what is, after all, a cartoon lion in any way represents an increase in our pride and passion.
I won't go on !
Have to say I quite like PRIDE, PASSION, PURPOSE though.
I know which badge my dad would have liked,,,, here is his wallet already for his next match,,,, complete with his admission fee, his concession card and the club badge that we was deeply proud of,,,,, the new ones not for me either. That makes me officially "" an old git " too Matt,,,, but we knew that anyway
The above debate raises the issue of engagement and consultation and poses the question as to whether more grass roots prior discussion would have informed the outcome
Always sensitivity on colours, names and logos
I understand the copyright issues, it is why many clubs have changed their badges.
I remember it happening at Fulham, as they used to use the Fulham & Hammersmith coat of arms. That is still a bone of contention with some supporters 18 years later. They now reinstated the old badge on leisure wear etc.
But if the club are so passionate about us supporters, why did we not get a say. They could have put out three or four designs and let the supporters vote.
With us all locked in bored out of our minds, they could have set a competition to see who could come up with a new design.

I don't like it at all! A cartoon badge that belongs in a comic I would say.
I will never buy anything with it on.
The history and the identity of the club disappeared from the logo.
It would be nice if there was a possibility of a rethink, but the way it's been done I guess not. Shame,
Have to agree with the above comments about consultation. I thought we were going into an era of openness but obviously got that wrong. Don’t think there is anything wrong with the new emblem but we are “Hastings United” so what’s wrong with using the town badge?
Understand the need to protect the rights to your logo and if the previous one didn’t do that then yep change may have to have happened but not personally a fan of this as puts to much emphasis on the heraldic lions in the badge as it’s inspiration when I think there are many things that could represent the club & town better. The logo itself isn’t awful it’s just not relevant to us. A choice of 4 relevant designs and letting the fans choose would have been the right decision imo.
In 2008, QPRs new owners unveiled a hideous new club badge which was deemed by them to be more suitable for a global brand. The supporters hated it. Luckily after 8 years new owners decided to ditch the badge and spent a 6 month consultation period with supporters to come up with a replacement. From the feedback the club produced 4 designs which the supporters voted on.

We did all the above under the current badge, so why change it ?
I do not like it at all. We are proud to "HASTINGS UNITED" so let everyone know its us, leave our badge alone.
Well, the overwhelming view on here is that this new badge is not wanted and last I saw on twitter a poll of over 250 people had a 68% response of 'I hate it'!
I think that says a lot about the lack of consultation over this change!
Unfortunately it appears the Isthmian League have already been informed of the change. My season ticket may need to be altered when it arrives.

If there was a will, I am sure that the League can be read used. They won’t have done much with the earlier notification, if such has occurred.
I assume that next seasons kit order could also be amended? It would be good to get some feedback.
I hope that the above comments on the thread will not be construed as negative.
They are simply feedback comments from supporters, many of which are long term, who are disappointed in not being consulted and feeling unvalued
Really think the club has dealt with this so badly. After a really positive last 8 months all that is being risked by changing the badge to something that has no relevance to Hastings. This positivity has come about using the existing badge and now that is being risked by using a badge that most don't want. Can't believe the town would not allow the football club to carry on using the town's crest. The town should be proud the club represents it and the club should be proud to use the town's crest. I think the copyright issue is laughable and the new lion is just something that has been nicked off google apparently and not designed by anyone for the club so that has copyright issues itself. The fact that someone said 68% hate the new badge doesn't surprise me. If the club feel the badge needs to be changed then firstly they should ask the supporters in a yes / no question and if yes wins then propose some alternatives to vote on including the existing badge.
The badge does not belong to the directors, chairman, owners. It belongs to the Club. Those in charge at the Club have absolutely no right to change it without consultation and I feel a backlash if the club don't change their mind on this.
It may be that disapproving supporters ave all had a change of heart. I may be mistaken, for which I apologise, but I could not find their views including the supporters poll, on the club twitter feed

Watford carried out a similar exercise last season, in an attempt to replace the moose with something more hornet-y. The club invited submissions from supporters, then whittled them down to a shortlist from which one was chosen, then that was put to a vote against the existing badge. And the existing badge won, almost inevitably. It did provide the club with a new, groovier logo with which to produce merchandise, though, while managing not to antagonise the supporters too much in the process. I do, however, appreciate that we're talking about a club with far, far, far greater resources with which to organise that kind of thing.
For me, the new badge is just too generic, and that's the missed opportunity. I understand the desire to have ownership over the logo, and to create something more modern at the same time, but it could have something of the distinctive flavour of the town.
So far I have been impressed with what Billy has done for the club, but I feel this may be his first slip up. With supporters showing their disapproval here, could Billy please make a comment.
End of the day there's alot of people who actually like it.. Obviously it's a huge change but it yet again another good move... I remember when people said we need a new view and a new path as we have no ambition.. But since Billy has taken over its actually moving on.. We are not just going to be what people say (same old hastings.) . We are going places and moving in the right direction! But that's my view obviously but I'm sure not many will agree with me..

It’s not whether people like it necessarily It’s the PROCESS whereby decisions like this are arrived at without engagement
I like neither the new badge, nor the process. As Roger indicates, the club needs to engage with its core supporters about such matters which go to the heart of its identity.
There are many positives about the current administration of the club, but transparency, approachability and engagement are absolutely key going forward; particularly in these difficult times.
30.000 people have died and you are all moaning about a badge you should hope you see hastings kick off the new season if that happen
I take your point Ollie, but it's no help to those who have died, or those who work to avoid others dying, if we give up comment about things which matter to us.
Sorry I’ve not been able to post personally as I’m not a member of the forum. Of course I’ve read and taken all the feedback on board, both positive and negative.
I did a video conference call with the Independent supporters club which I believe the Audio will be posted on the Hastings united supporters group on Facebook.
The feedback is not ignored and I hope a bit more insight can be provided from that chat.
I take a deep sense of pride and responsibility within my role at the club and I hope after hearing the chat it becomes a little clearer.
And more importantly, I hope you and your families are safe, well and getting through this time of crazy uncertainty. I’ve offered it every week on Facebook but I’m doing essential shops for supporters who can’t get out. If you need my help in anyway email me billy.wood@hastingsunited.com
That's well worth a listen. You can get a pretty good idea of the health of a football club by the ability to handle disagreements constructively, I think.
My thoughts are it’s only a badge and I couldn’t care what it is as long as it’s the right colours. It’s what’s on the pitch that matters not what’s on the shirt.
Sure, an organisation is healthy if it can deal with differences in an open fashion. Another attribute of a successful organisation is its ability to be a learning entity when processes aren’t quite right so that lessons are learned for future benefit
