After the big win against Herne it it is another game at TPF now against
Whitstable are currently the number 8th in the table with 18 points out of 12 games.
They scored 13 and conceded 15 goals. Top scorers are West and Smith with 3 goals.
Think this was our last home game against them in 2016:
Saturday, March 5, 2016
Sean Ray enjoyed a memorable thirty-fifth birthday, scoring twice and setting up two more, as United romped to victory against bottom of the table Whitstable Town at the Pilot Field this afternoon, and moved into the Division One South play-off places for the first time since the end of August as a result.
Trailing to Stuart King's fourth minute strike, Ray provided the assist for Billy Medlock's equaliser a quarter of an hour later, before his trademark header gave the U's a deserved half time lead, and brought up a half century of goals for the Club in the process.
Medlock added his second shortly after the restart to become United's leading scorer this season, with Ray completing his brace to effectively end the game as a contest with twelve minutes remaining, and late goals from substitute Tyrell Richardson-Brown and skipper Ollie Rowe added a healthy gloss to the final scoreline.
It had all started so well for the Oystermen, cast adrift at the foot of the table and without a win in eight matches since the turn of the year. Experienced striker King, on target when the two sides met at Belmont Road in January, chased a long ball down the right, cut inside and drilled a left foot shot past Harry Doherty at his near post.
U's boss Garry Wilson responded by switching to a 3-5-2 formation, freeing up Robin Deen from his starting right back position into a roving midfield role, as the hosts immediately gained the upper hand, with Sam Cole and Chris Cumming-Bart also highly prominent down the flanks.
Zac Attwood turned a shot against the post after Ray had nodded down a Sam Adams corner, but the visitors' inability to defend set pieces would haunt them time and again throughout the ninety minutes, with Ray teeing up Medlock for the nineteenth minute leveller from a Sam Cruttwell corner, and then powering home a header from another Adams delivery in a near carbon copy of his last gasp winner in the reverse fixture in north Kent.
Cole and Medlock were both denied by keeper Dan Eason, with Cole also firing narrowly wide, while Danio Brown curled a shot just over at the other end on a rare Whitstable raid into United territory.
The second period began with Medlock fluffing a golden chance after great work down the right by Attwood, but he made no mistake after turning expertly onto Cumming-Bart's fifty-first minute cross, thumping past the helpless Eason to double the U's advantage.
Ray and Deen forced Eason into further saves, while Charlie Smith and King brought the best out of Doherty, before Medlock missed an excellent opportunity to complete a hat-trick when he dragged a shot wide after escaping into the area down the left hand side.
A downward header from another Adams corner earned Ray his second and United's fourth, while Richardson-Brown seized upon Jack Sayer's poor clearance to fire low past Eason and make it five, and one final Ray header from one final Adams corner was blocked into Rowe's path for the defender to add number six in added time.
The only negative on the day was a tenth yellow card of the season for Cole, which will rule him out of Whyteleafe's visit to the Pilot Field on 19 March and the trip to Molesey three days later. Between now and then, United face a trio of away fixtures that will test their promotion credentials, starting at eighth placed Corinthian-Casuals on Tuesday evening.
And we? Just bring in the same spirit and result as against Herne Bay!
Three very good goals and three vital points. Some good individual performances and patches of quick passing play. A pity Sam Adams didn't score on his five hundreth appearance for the club - he had a couple of excellent opportunities!
But, oh dear, once again there were too many mis-placed passes and our defending looked far from assured against another (very) big physical side. Every time Whitstable had a free kick (and we conceded far too many of those, most quite unecessarily) we looked vulnerable. It was good fortune and yet again good goalkeeping from Charlie which limited the damage to a single second half goal.
We really do need a right back (I like Manny as a player but not as a right back) and another central defender. And I don't like Charlie being as exposed as he so often is. There really is a risk of injury when you have a game plan which seems to feature a 'rush' goalkeeper along the lines of playground games at the junior school.
Won’t comment on us defensively or the right back position at fear of upsetting people again but 5 clean sheets in 20 games in all competitions isnt great, but at the same time, if your getting a hatful at the other end I guess it doesn’t matter too much, but it does show up against the better sides who are a bit more ruthless in front of goal.
i actually thought it was very good performance today against a half decent, physical Whitstable side. We had more than a few nervous moments in the second half but totally deserved the win and really should have won by more with two glorious chances for the magnificent Sam Adams, Antonio, who passed when it was easier to score, and miss of the season from Daniel, who was superb throughout yet again.
Special mention for Jack Dixon today who was for me the best player on the pitch and also a mention for the second Hastings goal scored by Sam Beale, which was for me goal of the season so far. A magnificent team goal involving countless passes. It really was a fantastic goal.
But final word to super skipper Sam Adams. Right up there with my favourite ever Hastings players which is some compliment after 35 years of support. Fantastic role model and a super player.
A thoroughly absorbing game, and a good win against a really gigantic Whitstable side who need to order their kits at least one size larger for next season.
We were in danger of losing our way in the first half as it all got rather tetchy and niggly, but pulled it together following an injury-break team-talk to produce fifteen minutes of excellent, crisp passing football which was capped off with a fine goal. The second goal was fabulous, a thing of real craft and elegance, and ought to have settled it, but they were always going to be a threat from set pieces and we were guilty of giving a way two or three rather soft ones, including the one from which they scored.
All got a bit nervy after that, and we were perhaps lucky not to be pegged back, but the level of graft put in was impressive throughout the side. And no-one grafted harder than Sam Adams: few players will ever reach five hundred appearances, even fewer will put in a shift like that on their big day.
One thing: did the referee not book their number ten twice?!
Whitstable didn't offer much apart from their height from set pieces. Frustrating then at 2-0 up to give away needless free kicks giving an inferior side the opportunity to get back into the game. Not at our best today but still enough good football to please another excellent crowd.
There's a video of the second goal on the FB group: www.facebook.com/groups/hufcsc/. Gets better and better each time you watch it.
One further thought: when we played that kind of physical, quite confrontational opponent last season, various players, particularly Messrs Rodari and Golding, tended to get embroiled in personal battles, getting up the noses of their markers, trying to win free kicks and penalties, getting in the ear of the referee. That really played into the opposition's hands as it just broke the game up even more and distracted us from the kind of football we're capable of playing.
Very little of that yesterday. We got on with it, took responsibility for winning our physical battles (great to see Jamie Fielding winning a vital far-post header late on, for example) and mostly let the referee do his job. That's a significant step forwards, I think, and something to build on.
Their number 10 should have been booked a few times for the tackles he threw out. but our lads handled it well and he wasnt the only one. He didn't get booked once actually , although their number 7 did and i'm sure he got booked twice !!! Never mind ,we dealt with them and its all part of these kids learning curve . The discipline among our players is fantastic at the moment. Even Dixon would have got involved previously , but he just got on with it and rode some very tough challenges . I really like the quick team talk when Chris called everyone over during an injury , even the ref looked bemused .All the players reacted immediately and it wasn't long after that we scored the first goal. That for me is top management !!! I don't reckon the players will face a team quite as physical as they were yesterday. I'm not saying all the challenges were unfair , in particular their two central defenders made some awesome Bobby Moore slide tackles on Daniel when he seemed through . Was a really enjoyable game . Have to say i'm enjoying my new vantage point along side my dad in the main stand . You see a much clearer picture of whats going on by being up high in a stand . Making the most of that now whilst i can !!!!
