A bit of humble pie coming from me. As one of those who thought we needed a scorer, well it’s comprehensive when you win 5-1 . So pleased for Daniel when he scored his second and the reaction from the players said it all. Good atmosphere round the ground as well.

A nice touch from Sam Adams to give him the confidence boosting penalty ( which just went in! ).
I really hope that is the start of things to come for the lad, but I don’t think we can depend on it .

Great start to the season, let’s hope it continues and Daniel prooves to be as good as his second goal suggests.

Enjoyable game - Thamesmead weren't a bad side -just lost it a bit in the last 10 minutes. Charlie's brilliant save when it was 2-1 was vital. Great way to start the season.

I don't think you need eat more than a modest bite of humble pie Phil. Yes, a 5-1 win of the opening day of the season is very gratifying and welcome. There were many positive to take from yesterday. Certainly one of those was Daniel's second goal which was outstanding - and, as you say, the reaction from the other players showed that all wish Daniel to succeeed and that Chris has built a genuine team spirit.

That should not though obscure the fact that we do still urgently need another striker. Daniel is a great prospect. He has very very quick feet. That cannot be taught. A player either has that or he does not. What can be improved upon is Daniel's confidence in front of goal (yesterday's performance will be a significant help), the timing of his runs, and the way he relates to the rest of the team.

I feel that if we had a taller player alongside Daniel providing him with lay-offs and flick-ons that Daniel would benefit hugely. Daniel cannot be a target man himself and it is asking too much of him to be a lone striker. If we can get someone who can lay the ball off and meet crosses, play the two of them up front with Sam Adams just in behind and Dayshone wide, then I am sure there will be a consistent flow of goals.

Well done all - as good a start as any. I don't get into pre-season but followed the comments re a striker which became more pressing given the Rodari injury. Daniel Ajakaiye did pretty well for someone who is more provider than finisher. Took the final goal well and was a real handful throughout along with Golding out on the right flank.

A decent performance against a stubborn Thamesmead outfit. Score could've been 9-3 but 5-1 will do. Let's see where we are in mid October.

Matt Bodkin was in the Thamesmead line up. Never forget that inch perfect cross he sent over for Franny Collin at Dorking in that play off semi final........

Point taken Geoff, a tall striker would be helpful. On the other hand not once did we score five goals at home last season ,only the 7-1 at East Grinstead (including the Rat incident) beat it.
Think Thamesmead must be Crutts favourite opposition. Have played them three times , twice last season and again yesterday and Sam has scored in all three.

An awful lot of positives to take from that, I think, particularly given that it was a much more competitive game than the final scoreline suggests. There were far too many occasions last season when the reverse was true: not terribly competitive games that we failed to turn into convincing wins.

Here, Thamesmead were direct and physically strong and tried to draw us into a battle, and I suspect they'd have come away with a result a few months ago. We really didn't have it all our own way but our defending showed real courage and commitment at times. And while there were spells when we lost our way a little bit, we kept coming back to what we do well, particularly in the composed, calm reaction to conceding the first goal, and it paid off eventually. We still had gas in the tank in the final fifteen minutes, and pace to burn up front, and that was far more than they could cope with. That shows the worth of what's been quite a demanding pre-season fixture list.

As for Daniel Ajakaiye...a bit more confidence in front of goal, that's all. He was on the end of the chances, as you'd want a striker to be, just didn't take them. Hopefully that'll come; that brilliant second goal will surely have helped. Beyond that, we already know that he has speed and trickery, but I thought he showed strength and tenacity too, and put in a real shift for the team as a focal point for our attacks. Thought Dayshonne Golding was the player we know he can be as well, really aggressive and focused.

Pretty much everything you could hope for from the opening day, then. Except for a knock to Tom Vickers which he'll hopefully recover from; his leadership at the back seems vital.
