From the main website. What fantastic news for every Hastings supporter and massive congratulations to Darren and the directors for tying these guys up so early. Absolutely over the moon!!!!!!

BREAKING NEWS

The club is pleased to announce that it has exercised contract options to retain the following players:

Matt Bodkin.

Frannie Collin.

Sam Cruttwell.

Jack Harris.

Simon Johnson.

Ollie Rowe.

The club are also in discussion with Sam Cole who is in rehabilitation after surgery on a serious knee injury and hope to reach an agreement to retain him under contract once he is back to full fitness which will be after the new season starts. All at the club wish Sam well with his rehab and have been delighted to see the hard work he has been doing to assist himself into getting back to full fitness as soon as possible.

The club are also in discussion with some of the non-contract players to hopefully retain their services for the new season.

We feel that by keeping the nucleus of the team that performed so admirably in the Play-offs for the Club, and the introduction of some other players we are already in discussion with, we can put together another team to once again challenge for a Promotion, which has always been the Boards priority.

Add Sobers and Stannard to that list and not sure ill lose much sleep over the rest.

Buzzing and what a huge boost to everyone after the play off disappointment.

Good news for us. Bit of a shame that Crutwell isn't trying to better himself.

Shame for who Chris? Maybe he just doesn't want too and is happy with his life as it is. He wont be the only player over the years to think that way. Looking at the extremes of Tom Chapman at Ramsgate who could have gone as far as he wanted and Le Tiss at Southampton. Plus I know his old man and he is absolutely loaded so perhaps that is a factor biggrin

I only saw very few games but I did actually think Stevenson had some flair and potential,

Would anyone else like see any old faces back, pelling, whitehead, king, Walder, Dixon, vickers, Adams, medlock

Can you imagine Walder and Vickers back with the new proposals for sin bins next season for dissent, we would play with 9 players all season!

Walder - reminds me of Duncan MacArthur - great player with loose cannon tendencies. I'd have Josh back in goal and we want that Sobers / Rowe central defence. Sam Cole will be like a new signing and could be that assistance in midfield for Johnno. I know Cruts would be good in midfield and many want him there but he ended up a bloody good left back! Akoto does well at right back soooo maybe that is the defence sorted?

Whatever - the nucleus of a decent side is there to build on last season. And the club will of course be beavering away working on retaining other players too. Certainly hope we can keep Danny Leonard, Harry Stannard, Bradley Stevenson for starters. Sam Cole and Jack Harris too.

Forgot about Danny Leonard, he is a must. Only got a glimpse of his ability but give him a whole season he could be something special. Pretty sure you wont see Bradley again. Has already said his goodbyes on twitter and returns to Gillingham with his new professional contract.

John I don't like seeing talented players not fulfill potential. Personally think Sam is as good a player as any in Eastbourne Borough set up.
Wasted talent is a shame our best player in the last 30 years should have played higher. Duncan MacArthur.

Cannot disagree with any of that Chris. Duncan one of my favourite all time players and better than Gareth Barry when they were younger. Crutts will get there one day I am sure.

Sam's still only young, despite all the games he's played. A bigger club comes in for him and he wants to go, we take a fee.

I have now read the first two paragraphs of the statement a few times and am not entirely convinced by it. Does it mean players signed a 2 year contract with the club having an option on the 2nd year. Or both parties have to agree the details of the 2nd year. I hope it's the latter but if it's the former we could have players that don't wish to be with us.

Chris I also had that concern. Is this a mutual agreement? If not then it's probably worthless. Let's hope these players have agreed, and want, to stay with us next year.

To enter into a contract is a gamble on behalf of both a player and the club. One hopes that both parties do so with their eyes open. The player cannot move elsewhere without a mutual agreement with the club to end the contract or a new club agreeing a fee with the club. But, of course, it's not all in the club's favour: the player is guarranteed whatever remuneration hasbeen agreed even if he turns out to be useless, gets injured or loses form. I can think of a few instances where we've had a player on contract who has pretty much ticked all of those boxes ........

Interesting paragraph about the new ground . I thought it had gone quiet . Surely there is no way that the new ground will be ready for the previous planned date is there ? It would be quite nice to have a revised date . I reckon we've got at least 2 more seasons at the PF,,,

The side we finished with was more than capable of winning the division. Not sure we would get players much better at this level so I hope we fine tune and go again with what we have plus one or two.

Agreed Simon. Just need a need a new keeper, a full back, defensive midfielder/playmaker and possibly another striker and we will be just fine. I see Josh Pelling won all 3 Horsham player of the year awards recently.

Lets hope he starts with them like he finished with us and not like he started with us......I think that makes sense. Rubbish up to Xmas and we all wanted him out, excellent after. Presume Sobers will be next as understand they are close friends and wonder about Harry as he lives in Ramsgate I think.

Dixon departs
One player who won’t be back next season is midfielder Jack Dixon, who has agreed terms with our Sussex rivals Hastings United. Jack rejoined the club last summer, notching 11 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions. We wish Jack all the best for the future. That's on the lewes site

Lee Carey back according to twitter as part of the back room staff who will play when needed.  Not sure about that one or his coaching abilities but what do I know, Adam clearly rates him highly.  Does this mean we can start the "we all dream of a team of Lee Carey's" song again? Zac Attwood, Stuart Playford and Wayne Pea*ock to follow soon. Joking aside, good luck to him. He brings us promotion I will be the first to purchase his hair products.

Looking through last years squad we are now aware of the many that have left, those that are hopefully staying on for the second year of their contract and just the two solitary signings but still one name remains elusive with no mention from anyone. What is happening with Harry Stannard? Think he is on holiday at the moment but surely we have already had discussions or are we waiting to talk when he returns? With another year of experience behind him he could be our biggest signing of the season. Any news anyone?

That is at least eight out now and just two in. I do hope we are not relying on these youngsters too much for the coming season. We may be able to integrate 2 or 3 into the squad but too early for most and a huge jump in quality. Frustrating when you see the quality other teams in the league are signing but this does seem to happen every season with Hastings and unlike most we appear to do our business late. Hope to see Adam's influence on signings very soon as I think Pelling and Dixon were always coming whoever the manager.

Shame about Sobers as he looked great with Ollie Rowe who can now look forward to yet another defensive partner this season. Not sure we have ever found a replacement for Razor and we already look like we need at least 4 new defenders.

You are right Steve, he did quickly become a fans favourite but that was more to do with him as a person, and how friendly and approachable he was and still is in both person and on social media. To be honest, he had very few good games for Hastings and was eventually dropped and yet every time he plays against us he looks a million dollars. Think the travelling was always a problem for him.

As with many clubs, there are many rumours that fly around a club. I listen to them around the Pilot Field and wait for the truth to emerge.
One rumour I heard a few weeks before the end of last season was that Hare would leave, and we would use academy players next season.
Well the first part was true, could the second part be true as well.
I always believe 'if you're good enough, you're old enough', but I also think you need some experience through the spine of the team.

I reckon Josh, Ollie, Simon and Frannie would constitute a good spine. Add in Sam Cruttwell and Cole, Jack Dixon and Harris, Matt and the youngsters we saw last season and any new signings Adam makes and we have a good looking team. Still need to get strength in depth but that has been an issue for several seasons. Over to you Adam.

Am I wrong to be slightly concerned by Adam Hinshelwood's comments in today's Observer? He says that he " expects some of last seasons squad to stay and some to move on". Well we have already lost Emptage, Pidgeley, Mason Hughes, Sobers, Stevenson, Barnwell and Nicholls. That is 7 members of last years play off semi final squad. We have replaced them with just two players, albeit fantastic signings, in Dixon and Pelling. Who else is he expecting to leave? We only have Stannard and Danny Leonard left (what the hell has happened to him, he was superb?) to make an announcement on. Are we perhaps not so confident now that those on 2 year contract will indeed stay? Is the lure of moneybags Margate becoming too great?

He then goes on to say "Hopefully a couple more will come in" and "I think we've got the right players". Well I hope the couple of players he is looking to bring in are top defenders because at present we have none apart from Ollie Rowe, unless of course Crutts is going to have another season at left back. He mentions one new defender training and a very welcome return for the excellent Danny Ellis but not a lot else.

Finally, on the main website it says "Adam Hinshelwood is delighted with the quality he has seen in the Academy and fully expects quite a few of the youngsters to break through into the First Team during 2017/18 season" . That is a very brave comment to say quite a few will get into the first team, as we all know that the quality of the old Ryman is just getting better and stronger year on year. I do hope we are not going to rely too heavily on the youth section to get us out of this league in the coming season or do we have no choice due to money restraints?.

Stevenson & Barnwell were loan players only so never expected them to stay. Nicholls was only a backup so only really lost 4 so far.
We seem to have forgotten about Stephen Butcher and Richard Davies - no word on either yet.

Tom Climpson, Jonny Akoto, Ollie Black and Bradley Pritchard all did well last year when picked.

With the Managers contacts and Brighton association I am sure that there are plenty of players available and who will have been invited to training. I am not at all concerned.

Don't mind guaranteed season long loans ( say some young Brighton U21 players that Adam knows and who want to play for him and who think that his coaching will be good for them ) but agree that lots of monthly and rolling loans can defiantly be disruptive but sometimes can be handy when injuries strike. ( jay may was a excellent loan initially last season when Frannie was injured for example while he was with us )

trouble with loan players long or short time is that it dos'nt build a ateam to go on of course you need to cover but at the moment don't seem to be getting players in yet always seem to be lets see who turns up for preseason and still no word on harry.

I agree with John and Chris. Frankly, I was disturbed by Adam's comments as reported in today's Observer. Quite simply we will not get promoted if we rely on what we have now, plus a couple more who might come along, bolstered by loans and Academy players. I don't want to be negative and usually I'm not; but surely anyone who has watched this league will know that no side can possibly expect to get into the top five (is it six this year) with such a policy?

When are we going to hear whether Harry is staying? As I said in an earlier post we have a reasonable core, I know we need another centre half, and there are several good youngsters but we need a few more signings to give the squad some depth.

Well that is a huge blow. I Thought Danny Leonard was a fantastic player and his performance at South Park was one of the very best I have seen in a Hastings shirt. How hard did we try and keep him? Getting really concerned now and if Stannard goes as well we need some serious signings.

Gutted about Leonard and is that now 8 players from that fantastic play off semi final squad that have now left. And there was me thinking just one or two additions to that squad  and we would have a league winning team. Over to you Adam.

Yea, losing Leonard sucks big time. And Sobers. But whatever other clubs are up to doesn't bother me. We still don't need much to put together a decent side - Tom Climpson, Johnny Akoto, Richard Davies, Sam Cole (October), Jack Harris for starters and I'm sure Hinshelwood is looking for a centre half. What really frustrates me is Hare leaving when the foundations were in place to build a promotion winning side - all the more seeing that three go up this season. Seen it before - with Peter Sillett and George Wakeling who both took several seasons to get it right.

I'm still gutted about Danny Leonard. Surely you have to be retaining players like him and Stannard, or at least trying, if you are serious about promotion. Could understand if he was going to a higher level, but with all due respect....Herne Bay! Really disappointing and be interesting to hear what was behind the decision. Perhaps his head was turned when he saw we were training at the Firs at the weekend. See a few have commented on twitter about this already but I guess avoid the six inch pot holes, glass and needles then I guess its alright, just ask the supporters team.

Was surprised to see them on it as well tbh! Last time I had to go there to get back one of my 'row z' clearances from our training I almost entirely fell into a rabbit hole it was so big! Wonder if they had to scale the sheer wooden fence to get in there as part of the training as we do as well! :)

A thought on squad composition. Some of you may have heard of Laurence Ball. He last played for Tonbridge and has been at Margate and other Kent clubs.A very close relative of his is a friend of mine. He told me last season that Darren who knows Laurence well regularly phoned Laurence to try and persuade him to join us. Laurence declined. he had been injured and was not ready to play for anyone.

A couple of weeks ago I heard from the same friend that Laurence is friends with the Sittingbourne manager and has signed for them. He is I should think in his 30s now and I gather the idea is that he plays from time to time and helps with coaching.

My point is that managers in this league recognise the need to blend youth and experience to stand a better chance of promotion. I have no idea about the rest of the Sittingbourne squad but this approach is one that appeals to me. Fingers crossed that our man feels the same way!

Referring back to the first post on this thread, it would seem that all of the players listed were highly surprised that they had been retained for another season - having agreed no such thing when their contracts were prepared. Perhaps this is why some are not showing up now.

Confirms what I was told last week and nothing to do with training as so many supporters were assuming. To be honest what a huge mess this is. The club think they have them on two year contracts, the players know nothing about this. What is going on? Either great incompetence on behalf of the player for not reading what he is signing or either bigger incompetence by the club for announcing it when no such agreement is in place. There is a big balls up somewhere along the way and find it hard to believe this has come from the club. It just wouldn't be announced....surely.

As mentioned on another thread, we can but hope that the reason nothing has been mentioned by the club is because they are still trying to resolve it although I understand it has gone well beyond that now but lets wait and see. I for one will be desperately sad to see both Matt and Frannie leave as they were both a huge part of a pretty amazing and exciting season last year, but not sure we will see them again.

As for Harry Stannard, what the hell is going on here? Why is nothing being said? Is he staying, is he not? are we even in talks? 2 1/2 months now and still no news. Its getting like the Bradley Goldberg injury saga from a few years back.

Great to see Billy now confirmed on the main website. Fantastic player, always been a fans favourite, and a very pleasing signing but just imagine him and Frannie together in the same team nononono

Interesting comments from earlier in year from Dave Nessling. Appears Darren Hare was told this was a requirement if the players were signed. If you read the whole article closely it also appears he is not 100% confident they will all stay but would like them to stay so perhaps the doubts were already there.

I Really don't understand all of this, Players on 2 year contracts who possibly they know nothing about just walking away and joining another club.
Can we not go after the clubs that they join and legally demand compensation for breach of contract?
Or do we just leave it which makes the contract they originally signed not worth the paper it was written on and a complete waste of time!

All depends where the contract is, as I understand it for it to be valid it has to be lodged with the FA. Not 100% sure if this is correct though, but if it's not been lodged it's not valid. If it has then yes they should not be signing for other clubs.

I would imagine that if a player under contract to one club plays for another without permission the second club would be fined / docked points for every game the player played as they would decreed to be ineligible. So very unlikely another club would risk attempting to sign a deal with the player without agreeing terms with the first club and getting it 100% agreed by the FA / League.

Does seem a bit odd that apparently none of the players were aware of the option clause until tyhe club made it's announcement. Perhaps when they last looked it wasn't there, and yes, they should have checked again later.

So the worst kept secret in Hastings is finally out, probably months after most Hastings fans knew it was probably going to happen anyway, that Bodkin and Collin have gone to Margate. No idea what is going on at this club at the minute but everyman and his dog is leaving. Lets remember only 2 years ago we were almost relegated to county league playing ill equipped youngsters and poor signings. Three good signings so far but nothing else for any supporter to get excited about. As for Harry Stannard......answers on a post card please.

And to add insult to injury could it be even possible to actually hand pick a more difficult start to the season??

H Corinthian

A Carshalton  (on Monday)

A Ramsgate

H Lewes

Well I am assuming we have the following;

Pelling

Dixon

Medlock

Johnson

Harris  (will we get a full season as always injured)

Cole (Supposedly back October/November so count him out at present)

Cruttwell  (I hope, has he been training?)

Rowe

No idea about Davies or Stannard, and we have about 30 under 21s who everyone is expecting to perform miracles. Have I missed anyone?

Clearly very few defenders and absolutely no width or pace in the side.

There was a picture on twitter this week under the heading of first team training and counted 14. Would you not normally have 20-30 for pre season? Remember last year we had those sort of numbers.

oh Danny Ellis is training and that Hastings legend and set piece maestro Lee Carey may pitch in.

Plenty of time yet Phil and a nice easy first 4 games of the season for everyone to bed in.

Thanks John, more or less what I thought, although have to admit did not recognise hardly anybody from twitter photos.......shall go down the old town on Saturday to see who we have. Might be some surprises.

The club advises that following negotiations with Margate FC agreement
was reached to sell Frannie Collin and Matt Bodkin to Margate FC for
undisclosed fees.
Both players were contracted to the club for the 2017/18 season but due
to their change in work circumstances they advised they could no longer
commit to the training and match travel required for them to be able to
continue to play for the club and therefore both asked to be released.
Whilst we are disappointed that both players cannot continue their
playing careers at Hastings United, the club going forward cannot
compromise on players being unavailable for training during the week
and/or on match days.
All at the club thank Frannie and Matt for their efforts last season and
wish them well for the future.

Corinthian have lost their striker, so probably won't be as strong as they don't pay. Carshalton and Lewes are top 6 sides and who knows about ramsgate.

On Collin and Bodkin-, medlock is a replacement for 1 so no loss there. So we need a wide player and a couple of defenders. Not too worried about it myself.

Losing your top striker and for me the star player in Matt Bodkin, who could unlock defences with a bit of magic, is a real worry. I'm genuinely worried for this season. Not good for my first post on this forum but I just had to say I'm worried!

Sorry John just had enough of money grabbing individuals who were not training and not always giving 100%. We will do better with players who want to play for club and not just turning up for the money.

Really hard to believe that less than 3 months ago we had a manager we all believed in and a squad who very nearly got us promoted. Now the manager has gone along with 11 members of that semi final squad. After all the excitement of last year you do wonder if it could be back to mid table mediocrity or even worse. But as some people have already said, they will settle for that to see the youngsters. What a load of rubbish! Look pretty silly in a state of the art new stadium whilst languishing in the county league In front of 150 supporters. I certainly do not want a return to that horrible season of two seasons ago. Let's just hope there is stacks of good news on the horizon as it is all doom and gloom at present......apart from Chris who doesn't care that Frannie has gone

OOTBALL: @margate_fc bring in a third player from Hastings United today. Striker Harry Stannard joins The Gate on a one-year deal.

Just becoming a complete joke now. Again, just being told what we already suspected months ago. Just really grateful that Margate could give us the news before our own club. Some good news though, we have some new training goals and the academy have some new training kit.

John why are you so bothered about these players the number of times you were on this forum moaning about performance, suggested that we were not consistent, so we need a new approach and we must trust Adam to get it right.

Just to think we we're maybe 3 or 4 players away from a real top quality squad and now look we've got to start all over again but we all knew they would end up there. So that's now nearly all of the starting line up from the semi-final now gone let's just hope Adam has something up his sleeve and quickly still I expect Chris b won't be bothered that harry has gone.

Which one of the 12 players that have now left are you talking about Chris? i challenge you to find a post where I criticised either of these three players throughout the season. They always gave 100% and will all be sorely missed. We were inconsistent deffensively but never offensively. You are glad they have gone, you criticised the signing of Dixon and then you say trust Adam to get it right. I think you trusted Darren Hare for about 3 games so good luck to Adam looking at our opening games. Expect him to be rubbish and untrustworthy by mid August. All good banter though.
