After the Twitter coverage during Saturday's game at Chipstead raised a few questions and comments about discrepancies in naming United's goalscorer, I thought that I would try and clarify how the Club's two accounts work on matchdays.
The main account - @hastingsufc - is updated manually with input from someone in attendance at the ground and can therefore usually be relied upon for accuracy, at least in correctly identifying when a Hastings player does something noteworthy.
The other account - @HUFCscores - receives automatic updates of goals and other incidents directly from Football Web Pages, which is itself manually updated by a representative of the home club only, so cases of mistaken identity will sometimes occur.
One contributing factor to the confusion that I did notice on Saturday was that the board displaying the two teams at Chipstead showed Jay May to be wearing the number 8 shirt, and Simon Johnson the number 9, so when number 9 started banging in the goals, our hosts perhaps understandably assumed Simon to be responsible.
Football Web Pages allows users to input line-ups for both teams, although there is an option that enables visiting teams to opt out and to prevent home teams from entering their details for some reason. Most clubs do take the trouble to input both line-ups though, but some don't bother with it at all, and some only enter their own side and simply ignore their visitors, which always strikes me as discourteous.
Anyway, the main message here is to not necessarily believe everything that you read on @HUFCscores when we are on our travels, as the Club is not in direct control of its content. Somebody obviously got a message to whoever was updating Football Web Pages for Chipstead on Saturday though, as Jay received proper credit for his efforts in the end.
Thank you Sean for explaining . It was quite funny at the time to be fair and at the end of the day most of us appreciate anything at all . I can remember ,less than 15 years ago ,when the only way of finding out the score was to ring the away club at full time to ask them . I can even remember going thorough the telephone operator to get the away clubs number and ringing them from that . I was just happy that we got a point at the end of the day on Saturday but yes it was a tad confusing at times . All has explained now ... Cheers i
