We are back in business : Hastings United for the first game of the season against index.jpg

Last year the visitors ended on place 11 in the table; 72 points out of 46 games.

We played last season away to South Park 1-1 ( goal Sam Cole ) and at The Pilot Field after a great first half we won 5-1. ( goals Johnson,Medlock,Harris,Ray and Cruttwell.

South Park had some good results in the pre-season friendlies ; lost and drew against Ryman Premier  teams Kingstonian (0-2) and Staines Town (2-2 ). Well known players are: Moody, Lavery, Quartey and Smith

And we? After the last season things can hopefully only be better : We have a new Manager: Darren Hare and a few new players in the squad who already made a impact in the pre-season friendlies.

Goalkeeper Pidgeley, players Watt,Wilson, Stannard,Bodkin and the return of Jack Harris Jack Harris

We had some great results in the pre-season friendlies; yesterday we won after a great first 45 minutes 3-2 against Havant & Waterlooville. ( goals by Jack Harris (2x) and Bodkin.

Hopefully a lot of supporters will come to The Pilot Field for the first game to support the team. I wish you all a great game and a perfect start of the season.

Come on you U'ssssssssssssssssss!

Preferred lineups?

Pidgley
Davies Rowe Watt Butler
Bodkin Johnson Wilson Cruttwell Cole
Harris

Presuming Collin is not fit, wouldn't throw May in to start straight away though.

Top of the league, not a bad start. Improved when Sam Crutwell came on in the second half good to see goals going in.

Great start from the lads today against what looked like a decent South Park team, they were no pushovers. We certainly looked a lot more solid than previous seasons and played a really nice passing game with barely a long ball in sight.

I guess we were fairly fortunate to go in 1-1 after the keeper, who was top banter all day as he is every season, decided to palm the ball into his own net after it looked like the shot from Watty was going just wide, but 1-1 was about right. Second half we pretty much dominated from start to finish with a great goal from Jay May on his debut and follow up goals from Watt again and Bodkin with a one on one. Could have easily been five or six, and a shame the outstanding Harris didn't get on the score sheet. He led the line today as well as I have ever seen and I just really hope his injury is not too bad. Great performances today from Watt and Rowe at the back, Wayne Wilson pulled all the strings just in front, and Harris was immense up top but MOM for me was Johnno in midfield. Incredible energy in that heat and a great performance.

So a really solid start and real praise to the management and coaching team who appear to have the lads super fit and hungry. A really decent performance and lets hope we can take that with us to Herne Bay on Tuesday.

I Agree with many of John's comments; but for me the obvious turning point was the introduction of Sam Cruttwell. He brought an energy into midfield which had been lacking and it was surely no coincidence that the goals started to flow once he came on. He put South Park under pressure in midfield and that enabled Bodkin - who had been impressive throughout - to have a very good last half an hour. Jay May and Harris started getting better service and we looked impressive and well worth the goals scored.

This was my first viewing of Darren's team and my first impressions were very favourable.
So....in no particular order......I was impressed by Bodkin, he looks very useful. I also thought Stannard and Wilson did well enough but need to see a few more matches to form a true opinion. Of the 'old boys', Simon was fantastic today, definite MotM for me. Jack Harris was very good too...a big improvement on Zac as a target man. Still baffled why Crutts didn't start....he's a class above just about anyone else on the pitch...and how ironic that he made the pass of the match within ten seconds of coming on.
Any concerns ? Well I couldn't quite work May out. He won some good ariel balls but seemed a little lacklustre and he and Jack were often doing the same job. I guess he only met the others today so I'm not judging yet. I was also unconvinced by Watt. He didn't seem comfortable in possession and gave the ball away far too often. Positionally too he seemed uncertain. I think an excellent performance from Rowe rather disguised a few problems in this area. I'm certainly not writing him off but he needs to convince me more than he did today (despite two goals !)

All in all we were much the dominant side and kept the ball as well as any Hastings team has for 10 years. The only disappointment was that we didn't make more clear cut chances from so much possession in good positions. It's obviously very hard to judge where we are after one match. South Park were decent but I think we'll come across a lot better sides.
But as far as opening games go this was a very encouraging start.

Not only was the attendance imo very low yesterday ( 322 ) but also the response here on the forum is not much; any reasons for that despite the good display from the team?

Lots of alternative stuff going on in the area yesterday, and at least one person was too worried about upsetting his Mrs by going to footy on their wedding anniversary!

Yeah weather was too good yesterday really! Beaches in Hastings were packed and with the Eastbourne Airshow on as well that will suck people away. But a good result to start and if it continues and word spreads then the crowds will grow for sure.

Created so many chances yesterday and really should have put a couple more away at least but as mentioned already Jay May had literally just met the team so no real connection yet but that will come ( hope we hold on to him for longer ( especially if Jack Hardis is out for a while ) as his physicality was a definite threat )

Don't think Sam Cruttwell will be left out of many more starting XI's going onwards if any!

On yesterday I don't think it was a good display, I would describe it as adequate. Many of the same problems concede goal through left back area. Not creating clear cut chances, and in the 1st half we looked clueless at trying to break down there mass defence. In fairness 2nd half was better and some of issues were corrected. Expect a lot more as we get into the season as performances like this will see us have a similar set of results to last season.

I agree with ChrisB in the fact that the Left Back position is still a Problem and why when we have signed Reece Butler who is a Left Back we then play Sam Cole there who is a Left Midfield Player and doesn't look comfortable at all.
Overall though especially in the second half once we got the second goal there was only going to be one winner as at 1-1 they were quite happy to sit back and play for the draw.
One thing that I have noticed since Darren took over is that our discipline is so much better and we don't keep giving away silly free kicks on the edge of their box as we kept doing last season.
It is going to take time with all the new players etc but if we we give Darren and the players all of our support then eventually we will have a promotion winning side and back in the Ryman Premier where we belong.

That was rather more than adequate I thought - but early early days, of course. I was stunned when we went behind after having had all the play and the gifted equaliser on half time was thoroughly deserved though many present might've had a bit of sympathy for the affable South Park keeper. 2nd half was excellent. Hope Jack is ok - he looked good and the overall performance was as good a start as we could hope for against a hard working South Park.

322 wasn't a bad gate bearing in mind it's the summer holidays and the usual lack of away support. There are clubs in higher divisions who would gag for 322 through the gate. We all know what will ensure consistently higher attendances!

Cannot make Herne Bay due to work. That will be a real test I suspect - and against a side who doubled us last time. Good luck all.

Attendance - From today's Ryman League website "In Ryman South, Hastings at home to South Park at the Pilot Field proved to be the biggest draw with 360 turning out to see a 4-1 victory for the hosts."

The announced / recorded crowd was 322. Where does the difference come from ?
