Poole should provide top opposition. Their manager Tommy Killick played for Wimborne against us in the FA Vase all those years ago. Surely a crowd of 600 plus beckons.
Actually, inspired by the fact that Saturday is the first game that I'll attend, Non-League Day 2015 and the fact that I hadn't seen too much club promotion since I moved here, I offered the club marketing person some promo posters that were politely declined (comes with the territory of being an artist/designer!) as she said that they already had stuff in place.
I wanted to do something a bit different (as it feels like an arty town) to make people look again at non-league football/see it in a different light.
Anyway, if the supporters club ever need anything designed then I'm happy to pitch in.
Not sure why you should have been turned down with your offer ...surely the more publicity the club gets the better . I know some other non league clubs go down the arty route , Whyteleafe for one ! Surely it wouldn't have hurt to give it a go ?
As Windy said though surprised that your were turned down, maybe a misunderstanding hopefully, pop into the clubhouse after the game for a pint and a chat with us and I'm sure that the Supporters Club at the very least can use your talents!
I imagine whoever turned you down didn't want to put Liam's nose out of joint, and possibly corporate sponsors.(I believe there's a design/signage company).
I like the quirky designs, but to be fair, Liam's fa cup one is excellent.
Dave68 - I'm sure that's why and, to be fair, I don't want to tread on any toes.
I just thought that I'd offer to pitch in as it's what I do and I thought that trying to catch the eye of a different audience might be helpful to the club. That's why I went non-traditional with the designs (tested them on my not-interested-in-football wife to see if they caught her eye).
I figured it's an arty area and trying to challenge people's perceptions of what Hastings United, non-league football, and football in general is always worth trying.
That being said, it's apples and oranges, but Liam's FA Cup poster is really nicely done!
Only 2-1? We beat bottom Club Chipstead 6-0 on the opening day! This'll be easy!!!!....
Gotta love your optimism fella! The FA Cup is a great leveller however the only thing we didn't get out of the draw was a home tie. We're confident but not in an arrogant to think we'll steamroller you guys. Hopefully it will be a cracking advert for non league football and may the best team win! COYD
You may be less confident if only you realised that we've completely planned this disappointing start to the season and to be lying in 15tj place just so that if we got to this round of the FA Cup again we would lure you into a false sense of security and thrash you :)
Damn, just given the plan away! :(
In all seriousness should be a great game, will be filming it in HD and will share the highlights on your forum too.
Your club sec reckons you'll bring 60-70 fans as well which will be good to see!

Was thinking exactly the same Tim, oh to have some of those guys available today. I still remember Wayne Peac**k maraulding up and down that right wing, one of my favourite ever players. Very rare you see a winger these days who is 6ft 4 plus. Ernie Batten was a terrific striker for us also. Even when he was in his twenties he looked like he was 50 with those strands of hair stuck on his head. And what about Matt Stock? Never used run more than 5 yards before he was out of breath and that's if you could get him to run, but what a passer of the ball and what vision.
Cant believe that was 30 odd years ago. Anyone know where those three players in particular are now? Bet Mr Stoddart knows?
Any Poole fans reading ? Just to let you know that I see on your forum that someone has pointed out that there is no parking near our ground . It's not strictly true . There is usually space in the surrounding roads . Just be careful not to block residential driveways please and make sure you don't park at all on the kerb ways otherwise the parking plods will stick a ticket on you . Take it from me I know ... I've got the TShirt for parking one inch on a kerb ...rules is rules I guess , but you have been warned !
Ernie Batten is Manager of Sheppey United, but I'm sure he was also Chairman for a while. They have not played Hastings for years, (they are now County League), which is a shame. Would be nice to see Ernie back at the Pilot Field, I wonder if there is any chance of a pre season friendly next year?
This would be a great game for us to win but we are going to have to be at our best to have a realistic chance. Tom and Ollie Rowe have done well at the back so I wonder if Sean will get back in if fit? Interesting to see what our starting team will be.
A disappointing performance today. We knew of the threat from Poole's central defenders at set pieces; but we had no answer to that; or for much of the game any effective way of getting past them when we did attack. I thought Tom Vickers deserved man of the match; but we missed Sean both at our own set pieces and in defence. I thought Sam Adams was well below his best - particularly in his delivery at set pieces. We looked a better side once Bright Temba and Sam Cruttwell were on - with some chances created - but sadly that was very late in the day. I don't wish to criticise individual players, but I really feel that Jack Walder contributed very little and I would question his inclusion on the starting line up after a three game absence in which we have done pretty well without him.
Well that was anti climax of the century. What a dreadful, lacklustre, uninspired performance against an opponent that never had to get out first gear. I have supported the management team throughout the dross and mediocrity all season but today they have to be held accountable. Poor team selection, poor tactics and just no plan B. Someone please come on here and tell me why, yet again, from the first minute to the last minute, we hoofed it long? Hoofed being the appropriate word. They had a central defender who must have been 6ft 8 and all we did was stick it on his head. I could see it, my 11 year old son saw it, the people either side of me saw it, so why didn't our management team see it!!!! why did they not change it ? I am lost for words and this is now becoming a real concern and the first time I have heard some real anguish from the supporters aimed at the manager today over our tactics. So perhaps people can answer these questions.
Why are we now playing long ball every game with the obvious quality we have in the squad?
Why are we not learning from previous games like Carshalton and Worthing, when the same long ball tactics failed miserably.
Why was Walder put straight back in the team. He was dreadful yet again and what sort of message does that send out to young Crutts who was probably MOM last game. Best midfielder in the league I was told at the managers forum. B****cks I say!
Why is Medlock playing in midfield? He has scored goals everywhere he has played and yet we persist with Harris who has now scored 1 in 14.
Is Razor fit or not? he has been on the bench for 3 games now. This was the game when you needed that type of player.
This was a huge opportunity for the club today and I just feel so sorry once again for the large crowd and also for the directors that appear to be bankrolling a hopeless cause at the moment. People can come on here and defend the team as much as they like but today was not good enough. We have been here many times before and I just hope Gary and Danny are not starting to lose the players.
Well done to Poole by the way. Thoroughly deserved win and I doubt they will ever get an easier win this season. Rant over!!
Gutted to have lost that, the most frustrating thing is that for a side top of the league above, they really weren't that good. We gave them 2 sloppy goals with our usual mess of a defence, although Vickers had a great game at CB.
Last 15 minutes was better, we finally got going and showed some fight, but all the long balls straight to the number 4's head, and making the subs too late cost is. And what is wrong with our set pieces!!! Can anyone actually beat the first man?!
The problem is Winchy, how easy is it to practice set pieces when you train at Hastings Academy or indoors? Never mind, just cheered myself up by looking at the Ryman league this evening, 19th place, happy days!
Thought both teams were really poor.Expected Poole to be much better than that given their position but they really had very little to offer and relied on us to play to their strengths(if you can call them that) by punting the ball up to the big lump down the middle. If we had an ounce of knowledge we would have changed tactics very early but for some unknown reason we didn't and just plodded on like a stubborn mule. When we finally did change we at least looked mildly threatening by getting wide.As mentioned in previous posts,I have found team selection puzzling and agree with names mentioned not bringing much to the team.We must shuffle the pack, ruffle some feathers and give others a chance.
Taxi for Wilson and Bloor they can share one don't deserve 1 each. For 75 minutes today we were worse than ever, its awful to watch, and I would imagine our players hate the game plan. I don't know what the 2 in charge see that the rest of us don't. Poor medlock a prolific goal scorer is played in midfield why? Why do we keep getting crap managers.
Taxi for ChrisB you mean ...... the only time you seem to be happy is when you feel the need to call for heads .... why dont you just piss off back to Eastbourne you miserable troll, or did they tell you to piss off too ? and thats why your here ???
lets not let people's differences with Chris detract from a terrible tactical performance from the management team today. I repeat once again, from the 1st to the 90th minute we hit it long, straight down the middle onto the head of the big 4. Everyone saw it happening and everyone waited for a change of tactics, It didn't happen. It was a very bad day at the office for Gary and Danny, that certainly does not mean I think they should go, and I don't think for a moment they will go this season whatever happens but let's face up to what we are seeing at the moment, no one can be happy. What did you honestly think of the performance today Deadball? Chris makes many points that another 700 odd supporters would totally agree to.
ChrisB ..what do you mean by "US" ? that suggests that you veiw yourself as a genuine supporter !! yeah right !! you walk around smiling like the cat that got the cream when "we" loose, followed by bile filled posts on here ... but when we win, you`ve got aface like a slapped arse, and strangely very little if any comment on here, thats not a supporter, thats a troll. and as for week on week !! ok, todays result could have been better, but it was our 7th cup game ... which means we have won 6 cup games alone, add to that 5 league wins and we are 4 games in hand over most in the league. But NO that's not good enough for you, is it ?? heads must roll ... again !!. Just do one.

Disagree with the comments about Poole. Thought they were a very good side, well organised and strong. But they are only playing in the equivalent of the Ryman Premier and unfortunately we looked every bit a team struggling in the Ryman South. Why did we make it so easy for Poole? Where was our energy and enthusiasm expected of all underdogs in the FA cup? Why was Jack Harris so static up against big central defenders. How much time did Billy Medlock spend in the penalty area? Would he have caused those big centre halves problems if he had played right up against them and we had played balls into his feet? Why was Sam Crabb left alone to mark their big No 4 at their first set piece? Why did no one react when the ball was headed into the area? Why was the whole side so anaemic and lacking in real effort in front of 700 supporters who must be wondering about returning again. Why was Sam Cruttwell, our most inventive player against Herne Bay, on the bench? Some positives- Tom Vickers again looked good at the back and, even if the match was effectively over, it was interesting to see Ollie Rowe play well at right back with Sam Crabb further forward. jack Walder also fitted in well at centre back. Overall, what a dismal way to exit the FA Cup-very annoying to let Poole have such an easy game.
Your absolutely right Bert and what a shame in front of a bumper crowd today. You are just not going to get these supporters back playing that style of football. Thought we would have had a real go today but barely won a tackle or had a shot on goal. All seems very similar to last season sadly but Gary has a much better team than Terry White had.

fair comment re todays game, and with players absent due to injury, others playing out of there natural positions, plus a new signing, it was never going to be a pretty game anyway, and i have no idea why the "john smiths" hoof it football, having heard both gary and danny shouting for the ball to be kept down and passed. but thats something they have to deal with in the dressing room and at training. and not by people calling for heads.
John, I agree with much of what you say. Certainly, there should be no question of calling for Garry and Danny to go. All such appeals and the resulting acrimony do is to damage ourselves. That does not mean that we should pretend that all is well. Plainly it is not. Our tactics were indeed very poor today and we should have changed our game plan and made substitutions far earlier than we did.
But for me the fault was not long ball tactics, as such, but our utterly inept and ineffective long ball tactics. If you simply hoof it up down the middle onto the head of a very large number 4 then we can all agree that that is futile and desperately poor to watch. However, when Sam Cruttwell belatedly came on he managed on two or three occasions to play a quick long diagonal ball that threatened to wrong foot Poole's defence, who were otherwise entirely comfortable. Had we managed, through the game, to hit early balls to wide players who then delivered a decent cross to players running through Poole's impressive but pretty static back line I'm sure we would have had more to show from the encounter.
Listen guys we have the players to play football so why do we sky ball. billy what a good striker he is but wasted the way we are playing ? management can't be that stupid. can they ? the mind boggle's it's so simple pass and move on the grass on and of the ball not many better sides in this league. no calling for heads? just using heads would be a starter. D & G.
well said doeboy. yes we play today against a team from one league higher but the players we have signed this season are mostly beter players than ryman south and have played higher so when you look we have on paper players that should do average at least in ryman premier. but there is no point having good players if you have crap tactics and once again we had a poor plan A and no plan B and noneof the 400 extra supporters that was at ground today will be back to watch that. i dont think it time to get rid of the manager but these continue poor selection or tactics and shocking football do leave you wondering if Wilson is the man to get promoted and if he can go on to even more better things. But if things like this at christmas still the questions will be more.
as other say above what really surprise me today was thelack of energy desire and passion. an fa cup game and we went out of it with no fight that with such bad decisions make another game that was painfully poor
Well it's difficult not to agree with most of what's been said but the one thing I CANNOT agree with is it's time for the manager to go !
I think Poole were very tough opponents today....they pressed us high up the pitch which quite often forced us into hurried punts forward which their 4 just gobbled up. At times we did TRY to play a little bit of passing football but everything seemed to end with a final hopeful punt as the man on the ball ran out of time. It was simply a matter of a difference in class/speed between the two sides. Totally agree that Tom was MotM, no one else in the running though Josh did pretty well too. Walder ? Yes VERY disappointing again in midfield and I would definitely give young Crutts a decent run in the side alongside Sam and Simon who did ok on his debut but nothing special.
Clearly there are failings right in the engine room that MUST be resolved asap because today's kick and don't-even-bother-to-chase football resulted in a woeful spectacle and 300 locals who turned up today won't be there for the next one. That's probably the biggest disappointment...we didn't even appear to give it a go today !
Totally agree Mick. We need absolutely to support, but offer intelligent comment to the management team. Indeed with the exception of the 'manager' issue there is a clear consensus among those who have posted today. I hope that does assist the management team. Of course, they will form their own view. but I think pretty much all of us think the squad is good, the signings have been excellent, but the team selection and tactics need radical improvement.
I only wish our management team would learn, but these comments are similar to what appeared on the Lewes forum about a year ago, so I wouldn't hold your breath. Tuesday will probably see us play a lot of reserve/back up player's. But I hope not as surely we need to get our strongest side out, and learning to play proper football with each other.
chris has a point. i certainly dont think it is time to sack manager Mick but i watched Lewes games last season and the style we play is very much like what he did at lewes but when he got job here and then friendlys and players we sign and budget we have i thought he would get us playing more football.yes Geoff there is a clear consensus here and agree what you say about offer intelligent consensus and hope it helps management team but we arejust supporters and we did not apply for job but we can not all be wrong and even if we areit is still so boring and frustrating to watch but hope yesterday may be a tunring point to our tactics
What summed the day up for me was at the end i was chatting to some Poole Town fans and as they left to get their Taxi they said with all honesty and meaning well "don't worry im sure things will improve for you guys and you wont go down"....
The thought that there was even a remote chance of this happening this season hadn't occurred to me until then but the games in hand situation does worry me after our experience last time. i would swap going out of all other cups at this point just to avoid that situation happening again.
But 100% need to stick with and support D&G for the whole season, but a change in the style of play is surely required soon. If we were grinding results out with it and were sitting top 3 or 4 then fine and i think we'd all accept that gladly but we're much lower and the crowds wont accept both long ball football with poor results for long.
We do have some really good players who could probably easily cope with Ryman Prem possibly even at Conference South level if required and we need to play to those players strengths as some look so ill suited at the moment.

aree with awful tactics it was crying out for Temba and tyrel to speed past and with the ball on the ground get past those big lumbs, they wouldn't have been mobile enough to stop them getting behind them.billy must be up front as main striker as well.
I also disagree with the comments about Poole being poor. I thought they were a solid and well disciplined side. But I do agree with the comments about us having a bad day at the office. We let it two sloppy goals which could've easily been prevented. The first goal was not closing the man down quickly enough and the second one straight from a corner. Poole had a very tall side, but it does worry me how both goals yesterday came from a set-piece. We should be well drilled on those set-pieces, I think especially on corners but having Alfie Hall (possibly the smallest guy on the pitch) on the near post was a bad idea.
Sam Cole easily had the beating of his man, especially in the first half and beat him countless number of times. The second half not so much as he read the game better and stopped any crosses from Cole or from him cutting inside.
Tom Vickers has most definitely man of the match yesterday with one of his best performances in a Hastings shirt, in my opinion. I've never been quite sure if having him as a centre back is a good idea as I much prefer his style of play as an attacking midfielder, but he proved what an asset he can be at the back. The match sponsor hit the nail on the head giving him the man of the match award, excellent performance.
Once again the long ball was played over and over again, and once again it didn't work for us. Having Billy Medlock trying to receive a ball from the air against someone about six feet taller than him is never going to work. Their defence was solid and well drilled and their number four is an absolute giant.
Our play got better when Bright Temba came on, because he had pace. I don't think the Poole defence had a great amount of pace, just height so when Bright came on he ran at the and round them, which they struggle to deal with. A couple of decent chances in the last ten minutes or so, much I'm pretty sure if the match was still going on now (nearly 24 hours later), we still wouldn't have scored. But that's the way it goes sometimes.
Think it's totally unnecessary calling for the managers head. We've been through way to many managers in the past couple of years and calling for another sacking right now is just ridiculous. But let's not forget that exactly one year ago today, Dom Di Paola took charge of his first game and we best Guernsey 4-1!
Well I have to say that as we cant win in the fa cup now I actually hope we get out of the league cup next week as that is just a waste of time like the fa trophy will be too. Concentrating on the league is far more important now.
Pretty sure if Jack Walder receives the ball just in front of our back 4 he will be looking to launch a long pass diagonally upfield . Just as a few years ago we had Lee Carey playing in a similar position and his default setting was to turn and play a short pass square or backwards. This used to upset a lot of our supporters at the time who wanted a more direct style of play. Hopefully we will settle into a style of play that is fast and a mixture of short and long passes depending on the situation.
