After a good performance in the second half against Hythe Town we already face a big duel against
Currently the number 3 in the table at home to the number 2.
Folkestone drew last Saturday at home after 3 wins ( see match report http://www.folkestoneinvictafc.co.uk/news/878 )
Last season we lost both games against them; away 0-1 and at home 0-2. They have a quality striker in Draycott and with his partnership with Rook there is always a big threat.
And we? Seems to be lucky not to go behind in the first half against Hythe Town after they hit the woodwork 3 times. But after the break we seem again solid, always finding space and also had many chances. And that is a big plus; somehow we seem - even if we don't play that well - to create enough chances to win a game.
A great goal by our captain Jack Walder and a very good performance and goal from Bright Temba ( pictures from HUFC website) make it a comfortable win at the end against Hythe.
Although it is just the start of the season it is not only the 3 points which can be won. Surely the winner of this game becomes a massive boost and a lot of confidence. Let's hope that a lot of HUFC supporters will recognize that and will support the team is this big game. Come on your U'sssssssssss!
Gonna be a really interesting clash between two hugely experienced managers who know each other really well by the sound of it and also two strong looking sides.
Can't wait for this one! Hope it's a big noisy crowd too, I'm really please with the programme for this one, some really interesting stuff from Danny Bloor and Dave Nessling amongst other things to read as well as Simon Stoddards excellent double page piece and a 'day in the life bit on Pells from Ian Noble.
Don't want be Mr Grumpy but I have just witnessed an hour of the worst rain I have ever seen in my life and its still coming down, Its like something from the bible. With another 24 hours of rain forecast what chance Tuesday being off?
I'm no expert John but with the ground being so dry and hard the chances are it will just was away from the pitch. Of course as always any news of the game being postponed will be put on the website and Twitter.
Looking forward to this one tomorrow night. Folkestone is usually one of my favourite games of the season too. There will be a minutes silence prior to kick off for the Shoreham Air Disaster in Saturday. Also, yet another tip top programme...if I must say so myself!
good luck to team tomorrow if it on with all the rain. cant make it but it is a big test and so important game and tell us a lot where we may finish this season
What a thoroughly miserable evening completely ruined by yet another totally incompetent ref who barely got a decision right all night for either side. Don't think we played particularly well but were right in it up to the sending of on half time. Spoke to a couple who were right next to the incident and they said it was a straight 50/50 and a yellow card at best. To be fair I thought Folkestone were the better team up to then and I just thought we got our selection all wrong. No idea where Okoh was but to replace him with Max Hollobone, who was dreadful on Saturday, was a big mistake and no surprise he was taken off at half time. And with all the excellent signings we have made this year there just has to be a better defender than young Hanifan. He was bullied all night by Rook and Draycott and 2nd half I felt really sorry for him as he looked completely out of his depth. The sooner Rowe gets back the better. And not sure on the tactics either. Hoofing long balls all night on to the head of the excellent Folkestone skipper didn't help at all.
Yet again, the only positive for me was Sam Adams who I thought was the best player on the pitch and a great goal for Attwood but to be fair Folkestone could have quite easily won by six or seven. I thought they were excellent tonight and will definitely be the team to beat this season.
And why, yet again, do Cole and Hollobone take all the set pieces? every single corner or free kick was dreadful today...please give it back to Adams.
So we all said this would show us how far we have come as a team and to be fair, still difficult to tell as the sending off had such a massive effect on the game, but for me, we have a few youngsters who have fantastic potential but are still not ready, we still look shaky at the back and god help us anything happens to Razor, and we still look light in the centre of the park. Still early days but an awful lot of work still to do.
Fully agree on set pieces n the middle of the park defiantly something need look at n I think once Ollie Rowe is fit with razor n smith in the team we should be good enough at the back, also I believe another full back would be extremely helpful as if Sam crabb or Alfie get injured do we have a good enough full back or any?? In my mind and I think quite a few Hastings fans I would like see whitehead n crellin back believes sort 2 of the problems and get Sammy back on corners and free kicks,
So where was okoh smith n Alan foster tonight ??

Folkestone were a very good side, quick, fit and gave us no time on the ball. As Stevie says we now know what we're up against.
Anyone see the red card? Looked to me like a 50;50 with no intent, such a shame to lose Cole now. The ref was a joke all night, heard as well he's recently returned from a 5 game ban which says a lot. As bad as he was, whichever idiot threw a coin at the ref at half time should be ashamed. No need for that
Bad news continues. Pells off to the conquest with a dislocated finger.
As for the game. I thought Folkestone were good value for the half time lead. I guess the sending off was down to the angle the ref saw it from, and how much he listened to the Folkestone players. I heard there was a head butt thrown by a Folkestone player in the melee.
And just as we drag ourselves back into the game (a defensive sub would have been good at that point), we gift them a goal ...and then another, and another.
Just a thought. A lot of corner takers give a signal as to where they are going to deliver. One arm in the air. For front post. Two arms in the air for the back post. I wonder what sam's "shut your f**king mouth razor" meant!?
I actually felt first half we were very poor and Folkestone gave us a lesson in how to build attacks through midfield while we hit hopeful fifty yard balls that came straight back. Hollobone was poor yet again and I didn't feel Walder was much better. Second half with ten men we actually looked a lot more threatening for a time as I think Folkestone sat back a bit....and in retrospect we really should have avoided equalising until the 94th minute. Their second was down to weak defending, their third maybe a tad unlucky as the ball could easily have gone anywhere after hitting the post and their fourth another mistake. But we certainly can't complain.....they were STREETS ahead of us tonight, could have had six at least and we can't blame it all on having ten men for half the game.....or indeed the ref who was pretty awful. Like John, I think our selection was wrong and we flattered to deceive against very average opponents, Chipstead and Hythe. We MUST get more quality into the midfield if we are going to match the likes of Folkestone. Great goal from Zac but other than that, the contribution from him and Jack was minimal...then again the service they got was poor. While this was a sobering experience, we clearly haven't suddenly become a bad side but Gary and the players must learn from today as we were horribly outplayed, even with eleven men.
Should have added, the sending off tackle looked a bit reckless to me with, I thought, both feet off the ground and it was no surprise when the red card came out. However I didn't think it was AFTER the whistle as has been suggested on the Folkestone forum.

I have to say that from where I saw it the sending off was as a lot have seen it 50/50. Ironically as I walked onto the pitch I heard Cugley say to his assistant tell the ref to get on with it, they've both slid in for it nothing else. A very honest opinion if you ask me.
I didn't see the red card incident clearly. My first thought - like others here was that it was a 50/50 matter - but others I spoke to at the time saw it as a two footed challenge leaving the ref with little option but to give a straight red. Yes, the ref certainly was into theatrical gesturing which gave his performance the appearance of the comedic; but, compared to the truly awful performances from some of his predecessors, I didn't see the substance of it as that bad.
Otherwise, I can only agree with what others have said. We were poor in the first half with no control in midfield, creating little and out played all round. Then after the sending off of Cole we had a good 15 minutes at the start of the second half with a truly great goal from Zac. We then self destructed..........
So, a lot to do. I think the primary problem is in midfield. We cannot rely on Sam Adams to do the whole job. We went for Tom Vickers; for goodness sake use him.
Vicious, horrendous and appalling tackle. The words used in the folkestone Herald report on their forum. I assume the person that wrote that report was the same person that refereed? Interesting that Cugley and the supporters over that side felt differently.
There is a lot wrong at present, our front 2 don't pass to each other, defence especially LB looks weak, but this could be lack of midfield cover, midfield cant hold onto ball, JP has lost confidence and when the ball is crossed from wide he looks vulnerable. Dead ball play is awful we don't pose a threat at all as delivery is appalling. Am very concerned at the moment as if things go wrong in the next month I feel mid table mediocrity is starring us in the face.
Really surprises me there is not more concern we have played 2 good sides and been well beaten, could easily have been behind against a poor Hythe, Chipstead we were just about the better side until their problems. Missed Sittingbourne so cant comment. I have watched Gary Wilson and his teams for many years and have never seen his teams defend like us this season, so are we playing a style alien to him. John has mentioned team selection and tactics I believe we are being out thought off the pitch. On a positive we have 8/9 good players who will get us out of dodgy situations against poorer sides, but against 2 good sides this hasn't been possible.
We must win Saturday or questions will have to be asked already.
Whatever happened to big no5 trialist that was so impressive in the pre season friendlies before he got injured ? He would be great for us at the moment alongside Razor. Otherwise I hope Ollie Rowe is the answer to our defending although I always remember him as a left back when he was here before.
Any news on Okoh from anyone? he was on the pitch at the beginning of the game and was then seen leaving the Pilot Field half way through the match. Hope its just a niggle and nothing more serious.
And anything from the club on Pells? He would have been seen and back home now with the results so hopefully we have some news on how long he will be out. A full dislocation is usually a minimum of 6 weeks.
I think to say we've been well beaten twice is a bit harsh Chris, we lost to Chatham by a deflected shot and a penalty, I agree that if they'd taken their chances they could of added to the score line but as we've all said the referee had a massive input in that game with his inept performance. Last night we were beaten by a good side, I didn't see the first goal but errors in my opinion were to blame for the two of the remaining three. Once again the referee played his part in that, from what Cugley said he wasn't expecting Cole to be sent off and must of thought he was holding a winning ticket in a raffle when he saw the red come out.
For me what I'm more concerned about with the exception of a couple of players, is since we lost to Chatham the hard work to get the ball back once we've lost it has dissapeared. All through pre season and the early league games we shut play down so quickly that it made it extremely hard for opposition to play, we aren't doing that anymore, for what reason I don't know? I'm sure that if we carry on that style of play there won't be many teams getting the upper hand on us this season.
It's very early to say anything definitive yet, the team is mostly brand new and will take time to settle in. While that happens we'll probably have a few results such as Chatham where we'll be disappointed but as soon as we went down to 10 at half time last night we were hugely up against it vs a very very good side who's manager has been putting his stamp on things for over two decades!
We've got to get over it quick and beat Cray on Sat and also need to beat Walton on Mon ( if no replay for them ) to get our league confidence again. The Folkestone rematch is soon and if we can get a point there then that wouldn't be a bad result.
We're work in progress and we need to give Garry and the new players ( don't like to see the grief Hollobones getting in particular ) but I would still be very surprised if we weren't solidly in the 3-4 playoff position at least nearer the end of the season once things start to gel, Rowe appears, the Zac / Jack partnership gets better and Okoh gets a run of games.

What grief is Hollobone getting Dan that's upsetting you? I can only see that myself and Mick have both said he has had two poor games which he has, that's fact. At the same time I said that Max and Sammy were our two best players at Chatham in the match report. We don't want to go back to wrapping all the players in cotton wool like we did last year and being worried about hurting their feelings. look where that got us with the likes of Joe Shelley. Max has had two very poor games after a decent start but he's not the only one. Cannot see any other grief or unfair criticism unless I'm missing something.
I do agree its way too early and i'm still very optimistic as to what we can achieve this season but the time to make a judgement in my opinion will be on Saturday 26th September after a run of Folkestone A, Faversham H, Dorking A, Worthing H and Three Bridges A in the space of three weeks. Then it will be fair to make, as you say, a definitive opinion of how the players and management team are doing.
Impressive performance from Folkestone-good to see a club with a long standing manager and a reasonably settled squad. With Draycott and Rook upfront they had the skill and firepower to cause our defence problems and it was a tough night for some of our younger players. We were growing into the game when the sending off came-not sure if the red card was justified but with unpredictable refs it was always a possibility. I'm sure Hastings will improve as the season develops-hope the players and management (and supporters) don't get discouraged by one bad game.
one thing struck me last night . When Harvey made that awful mistake for the 2nd goal I would like to have seen one of the more experience players try to encourage him . From where I was standing the only one was Josh who ran out of his goal to encourage , ,,, he's young and learning and it isn't always right to give someone a mouthful ,,, do it after the game if you have to . That's my opinion anyway , for what it's worth
Having had time to reflect on last nights game,I have to question a few decisions made by the manager.Firstly, why was Hollobone being played on the right wing when Tyrrell would have been a better choice. To the manager's credit he made that change at half-time when we had to chase the game and it made a world of difference. At the point of getting back into the game I would have thought strengthening the midfield with Vickers or Crutwell and taking off one of the forwards would have been a good option.Would possibly like to see one striker when we play teams of a higher calibre like Folkestone, especially when we have pace on the wings and Sam Adams supporting the forward line.
Still early days. Garry knows what he's doing. He'll recognise any defensive issues. What is clear is that we have goals in us. We're going to win lots of matches, so let's be patient and enjoy the totally different atmosphere on and off the pitch.
was not at game on tuesday but was surprised when i see score and reading reports and stuff on here how easy we got beat and disappointing if we was not chasing balls down and getting back. knew folkestone would be team to beat this season but as games go by and league table settles down it is worry like chris said as the teams we have beat are all in bottom 6. but still early and like john says end of september will give a better picture after playing good teams in a row. what is a worry is what happen if we lose on saturday cos we must have a big budget bigger than last year and if we mess up saturday and no cup money is that a problem. hope pelling is fit such an important player.
