Hastings United's 1953/54 cup run, lasted for nine matches. Here are some of the programmes and newspaper cuttings. I do not have the programme for the home game against Horsham, or any newspaper cuttings for, Shoreham away, Horsham home or Hounslow away. The photo of Albert Parks (no.10) was taken at the Shoreham match.
Vernon, this is great stuff, but where are you getting it from, I know you`re no where near old enough to remember it, and you were not even born for most of it ?
Very true Rev, I was not born until 1964. Most of the items from the 1950's (not all) were given to me many years ago by the brother of a life long supporter. I have been meaning to put it on line for ages, but never seem to find the time. So I am trying to make the time at the moment. The later programmes and pictures were bought or taken at that time, though I do find the odd gem that I have long lost, on eBay now and again.
Thank you Vernon.these bring back wonderful memories of united cup runs.I clearly remember as a young boy seeing the great games we had against Norwich and Swindon and later against Notts County as well as others. As you can see I have my username of my favourite player of those days.
I was chatting to one of the players involved in that cup run just before we played Harrogate at home, he popped into the ground to havea look around and said that during the Norwich game someone took a pen and it stuck in the mud on the goaline, if it had gone in then we would of played Arsenal and as girling said they went on to beat them. Who knows what would of happened? Great stuff Vernon.
I am pleased that fellow fans are enjoying these. I will be posting the FA cup runs of 1954/55 and 1955/56, in the next few days. Fortunately or, unfortunately, whichever way you want to look at it, all these clippings and programmes are stuck in a scrap book. This makes it very difficult and time consuming to scan them, some pages have many newspaper cutting all overlapping each other. Most are also from broadsheet newspapers and very fragile. But I do not feel that they are for my eyes only, and I am very pleased, to share these with fellow supporters.
My suggestion when i spoke to Vernon a couple of weeks ago was that he has to start a website of this.
History of Hastings United ! This is great material and then others may bring in also material who can give a great read. And maybe the next step is a book........
Vernon - you met my dad a couple of weeks ago and these clips are right from the era when he started watching the U's ...he's in Ireland at the moment .When he gets back I will sit him down in front of a pc so he can see these ,,, he will love them mate ...on his behalf ,,,thank youÂ
Another interesting article, i wonder if this mini tournament ever took place? If anyone is wondering who the hell are ''Headington''? They changed there name to ''Oxford United'' in 1960.
