I've been scanning my old 6x4 prints and building up a computer collection and have found quite a few from Hastings Town days which some may find interesting - and I see that there is an image upload facility here - sooooo, let's see if it works - and initially it looks promising. 91-92, Southern League South champs, Deano, our current coach, Peter Carman and Peter Petkovic enjoy the day along with supporters.....
And this is when we ended a long long run of non achievement at the hands of Crawley Town who are now so far above us that I don't even particularly hate them any more - though I do have to put up with some stick at the hands of their Network Rail colleagues at work This was the 95-96 Sussex Senior Cup Final at Worthing's Woodside Road where Danny Simmonds won the game with a volley from the edge of the box, 1-0, att 1153.
I know this is Whaddon Road, home of Cheltenham Town and am pretty sure it was the 95/96 season when we had a rare win there, 2-1 with a gate of 608. Cheltenham, of course, have gone onwards and onwards into pro football. Here we have Steve Cuggy, our own south coast Geordie, who got one of the goals, Stuart Playford to his left who got the other and in the background is Simon Beard making sure his boots are clean.....
1998-99, THAT season when a local Lottery winner (not Mick Maplesden) lost interest in a matter of weeks, the season we got relegated by rule book. This was a tough FA Cup game at Eastern Counties Newmarket Town where Simon Fox got our goal in a 1-1 draw watched by 320 punters. We got out of jail big time that afternoon. No 10, ElTel, 7 Lee McRobert and on the touchline one Paul Tuppenny who I always seem to bump into at Morrisons. We won the replay 2-0 and got Yeovil in the next round and got stuffed 0-3 with a couple of disallowed goals and a Yeovil keeper lucky not to be red carded for an out of the box foul helping them just a tad......
1996-97, another FA Cup game - Chertsey away, they were Isthmian (Ryman) Div 1 I think they were then, Town were Southern Prem and 0-2 down with 15 to go only to win it 3-2 with an injury time winner from Darril Parris. I still recall discussing the goal with the home keeper who had been blatantly wasting time a matter of minutes earlier as Chertsey hung onto a 2-1 lead
And mentioning Crawley - here is a reminder of our Broadfield encounters with our good friends (gag, splutter, choke) from West Sussex - 97/98 I think this was, a 0-0 draw in front of 1573 punters. That looks like Phil Henderson taking the throw and Keiran O'Shaugnessy up front? Looks like our coach on the side line itching to get on......
And this is a game at Kings Lynn's excellent Walks stadium - another DM Premier game against a Kings Lynn lot that had just come up. Great performance from Town as they won 4-1, all the goals in the first half, 2 for Stuart Playford, Steve Cuggy and Justin Gregory - and a very respectable 904 gate. Kings Lynn had their share of money hassles in recent years, ended up down in the United Counties League as Kings Lynn Town - and successive promotions see them now doing ok in the Northern Prem. Left to right, Cuggs, Liam Barham (?), airborne Simon Beard (??) and no 5, Richard Callaway (???).... It's 17 years almost to the day that I took this - forgive an old man's failing memory!
DM Premier, 1997-98, I drove the minibus to the Victoria Ground, 360 odd mile round trip and I still recall Dean White laughing his whatsits off in the bar after we secured an injury time equaliser from Stafford Browne to get a 1-1 draw that did Rovers no good as they battled relegation - Deano had noticed me and other Town supporters behind the goal getting more and more up tight as that goal would not NOT come - that is till Staff's deflected 95th minute effort which Town thoroughly deserved. Rovers went belly up a few years ago and have I believe, started again in local football.
Great memories Simon. Not sure what happened to Liam Barham. One of the most talented players I ever saw whilst at William Parker. And what could we do with a young Stafford Browne at the moment! Believe he is still playing over at Uckfield at the ripe old age of 41.
Hi John - glad you like. So, Stafford Browne still going strong in the County Bumpkinship then! Loved that one he got up at Bromsgrove all those years ago.
And Bert - I'll see what I can find. Just found a disc with some pics on it - they'll be digital and better quality too. Bear with me as I go through the SS archives.
Fantastic pictures ....its so refreshing having a decent thread on the forum for a change ....welcome back Simon ...you have been missed...oh for a fanzine like "The Ghost of MG5YP" again !!!!!
That Cheltenham picture reminds me that it was about this time that their manager describe Hastings as a pub team after the game at Cheltenham. In the return at the Pilot Field Hastings went 1-0 down in the first minute after an horrendous mix-up between Phil Henderson and James Creed. Hastings then pulverised Cheltenham, then one of the best teams in the Doc Martens Premier, for the rest of the game ending up 4-1 winners. Not bad for a pub team.
Good to know this is well received - or at least nobody's poopooed it yet! Thanks for favourable comments, Windy. I don't have a clue who you are from your nickname but am sure I would recognise you. Will post some pics from the digital age soon - found some from that great FA Cup win at Carshalton 8 or 9 years ago whe Utd were Ryman South and Carshalton were Conference South. Watch this space for those and others.
As for the old Ghost on line - while I enjoyed my contributions to that, none of it could've happened without Karl Horton who did all the tech stuff. I quite often go back in time and have a look. My next project is to get the football vids onto my pc.
Blimey Simon, those pictures sure bring back memories. Although away games used to involve travelling long distances, usually leaving at 8 or 9am they were always very enjoyable...except when your daughter threw up in the minibus. Where were we going that day? I think one year ,apart from Crawley our nearest local derby was Cambridge City.
Do you have any pictures of what has to be the most memorable game, for the wrong reasons,of all time? I refer of course to January 21st 1992 Wimborne at home in the FA Vase . Probably the game most long term supporters will remember for all time. For those who were not there it was a Vase replay and over 2 legs there were I believe 17 bookings and 3 sent off. Dave Nessling who was then Chairman has to escort the referee of the pitch at the end.Could anybody ever forget the name of the referee.....Paul Vosper who unbelievably was a linesman in the Premiership the following year.Happy days !!!!!
Hi Phil. Yes - Vanker Vosper as he was called in the fanzine. Tommy Killick who played for Wimborne that infamous night now manages Poole Town and he was reminiscing recently about that season and did concede that his lot got the rub of the green that evening. I will certainly never forget it. It all sums up the people that run football for the useless, out of touch tick box driven dorks they all are that Vosper ended up being promoted. Another particularly inept official was Chrome Dome Barry Knight who managed to make major errors every time we had him. One of his more memorable Football League afternoons was at Bournemouth I think, where he had them down to nine men and Crewe won 4-0, something like that - and he drove out of the carpark with a home supporter on the roof of his car wanting to go over some of his decisions.
As for Bec being ill all over me - how could I forget that afternoon we went to Rothwell Town? Did we get stuffed 5-1 that day??
Anyway - another pic - Mile Oak at home in the FA Cup in 2003-2004 and Chris Honey gets stuck in with Karl Rook hovering - we must've won because a fortnight later we had that big win at Carshalton - more to follow.....
Don't suppose you have the shot of the en-masse Away support at Bath from the FA Trophy match(can't recall the year) do you Simon? I remember it appearing in Ghost.
Re request for Bath City away - FA Trophy, 97-98, and we hammered them 0-0, lost the replay 0-1 and Mark Gardiner, on a "gut feeling", sacked Garry Wilson who went onto great things at Langney Sports where a more patient approach was taken - and he duly led Eastbourne Borough as they are now known into the top tier of the Conference. To this day I don't know he we didn't beat Bath that afternoon at topsy turvy Twerton Park!
Now then - our local guru Phil Donaldson may be able to help - but I think this is Town vs either Trowbridge Town or Salisbury City at a rather different looking Pilot Field around the 90-91 season? Wayne Pea**** is 7, that's big Carlton Wynter sandwiched between several defenders, Andy Blondrage on the far post and I think it's Paul Giles out on the left...... Trowbridge are in local Wiltshire football while Salisbury are top tier Conference.
And this is Hastings Town up in Cambridgeshire taking on Histon Town who have since gone through various ups and downs on and off the pitch. I guess this is the 2000-01 season because I videoed the game the following season. Was this the one we won 5-2 with Aussie David James getting 3? Whatever, that's Duncan McArthur getting stuck in, Steve Yates on the right and far left I reckon is Matt Ball......
Sign off latest blast from the past with three from the 03-04 season with United a Ryman South club getting through the upheavals of the previous couple of seasons. This is the FA Cup tie at home to Croydon who I seem to recall were also Ryman South - but Phil Donaldson and others can correct me on that.
That famous 3-1 win at Carshalton Athletic who, at the time, a Conference South side, were two divisions higher than United - played their hearts out that afternoon. Must admit those were the early days of struggling to maintain the passion for various reasons that I won't go into here - so players' identities and match details aren't recalled like games were 10-15 years earlier! But Jimmy Elford definitely features in this shot at Colston Avenue!
And a league game at home to Bromley - again the 03-04 season - and a wide open Wood End, pre Cole Warren stand. I seem to recall we did the double over Bromley that season but they have since gone onto bigger things and are now doing pretty well in Conference South where Mark Goldberg, father of Bradley, looks after affairs which are probably rather less frenetic than at Crystal Palace.
I will keep looking through various albums etc etc - and I am sure I have old hard drives with football stuff on them too. And I know I have some stuff relating the 91-92 promotion game at the Pilot Field with Weymouth - but here's a peek at their superb Wessex Stadium - late 90s I seem to recall, 98-99 maybe, when we won 2-1 with both goals from Steve Yates - who on his day was electric. 803 attendance. Weymouth have always been an up and down club with off pitch hassles but are currently doing ok in the Southern Prem. How many of you remember that fantastic 2-1 win there in 91-92, 1538 attendance and the place heaving as Steve Willard and Paul Giles got two great goals...
HA HA = just scanning through my latest postings and the bad language detection software has leapt into action again to save your blushes in the caption relating to the 90-91 game against Salisbury or Trowbridge - you older supporters will have the best memories of that legendary 7, Wayne Peac o c k as I have to present his name. The amended caption is below - check it out.
" Now then - our local guru Phil Donaldson may be able to help - but I think this is Town vs either Trowbridge Town or Salisbury City at a rather different looking Pilot Field around the 90-91 season? Simon, I know that those standing behind the opposition goal used to have a lot of banter with their goalkeeper, especially Maurice Munden, but who was the miserable bloke who used to play for one of the West Country Beazer teams. I'm thinking Bath City, maybe wrong but cannot recall his name.
Mark 'Clean Hands' Hervin who played for Bath City. Mo Munden was top drawer and even in the depressing knowledge we knew were almost down after losing at Folkestone in 02-03, a load of us made a point of shaking hands with Mo as he was calling it a day that season. Lee Turner was another good un - he played for Margate, Gravesend and Bury Town amongst others.
Tim revives memories of Town avenging that 0-6 drubbing at Cheltenham a matter of a few weeks later. Most enjoyabe. Nothing quite like putting matters right.
I have to say - as a supporter of only 10 years myself, I am loving this thread. Its such a great pictorial account. I can see several faces in the bath picture that I recognise as well. Like Windy - i also enjoyed looking at the MG5YP site as well. Thank you SS for arguably the best thread on this forum in a long long tiime
Brilliant stuff Simon. That FA Trophy game at Bath was my very first away game 97/98 season? (For anyone who cares I'm the kid who can just about see over the barrier and picked the right moment to look away)
Any other forum members in that pic? I've spotted Si Avery - unless I'm going loopy...
Andy & Phil Boswell, Heidi, Mark Westbrook back in the day when the banter behind the goal was hilarious... Can I see old Fred Westbrooks face behind Mark? Never heard anyone suck boiled sweets as loud as him! (or moan).
Ah yes, the Boswell Barmy Army. Would be bantertastic if that was to reform. Some of the best was at Chelmsford's original ground, New Writtle Street, one evening. As I went to the covered end that Town were to attack, I found myself reading all the usual old guff in the programme about welcoming our friends from the Sussex coast as the City fans launched into a chorus of 'F**k off, Hastings' and didn't it get lively when we found ourselves two down inside 10 minutes......... And the considerable Town following which I am sure included the BBA was able to return it all with interest when the score was 2-2 after 25 minutes! Great banter, loads of laughs and not a hint of trouble - all that was good about the semi pro game.
I also recall some of us up at Kings Lynn having a go at a player who was over doing an injury towards the end of the game in order to waste time, blatant it was and we had a train to catch just after 5 so time was tight and we made sure, er, Terry White knew it........
Fantastic photos I really love photos from yesteryear. Thanks for sharing Simon, would be great if young Dan and Liam could do a piece in the programme with any old Hastings United ones you have and maybe a little footnote from yourself?
Yep, great to see them old photos . You were saying about Mo Mundun being great for banter got me thinking about Chris Hampshire , although an out field player he always found time to come out with a few gems, he just loved playing to the crowd. I really missed his wit when he packed up. The other thing i missed was the all action games against crawly town , I believe there was one game with them where twenty one players out of the twenty two were at each others throats.
Great pictures Simon. Were you at that fantastic game at Ashford (4-3 to Hastings) the season we got promoted along with Weymouth. Peter Sillett manager with Dean White in the side. Have you any pictures from this game?

Can't help with pictures Tim, but I'm sure that game was filmed by some guy possibly from Ashford, think he filmed a couple more games over the years. Bob Keen I think?

That name rings a bell Leon but I believe he has stopped filming games now I'm sure however he may well have that particular game in his archive.
That's defiantly something we would be proud to have in the programme with SS's permission? Maybe a few photos from one particular match with a description of the match and result if available?
I never took pictures at night games - a combination of not the right camera and lack of technique. I do know that Ashford game Tim recalls was videoed by Bob Keene as well as the home game vs Weymouth that pulled in 1200 punters including five coach loads of Weymouth supporters. Wow - 21 years ago. I did have the two videos in question and must see if I still have them. Quality would be poor by today's hd standards.
Dan,, feel free to use any pictures I put on here I will keep looking for more. I used to help David Bealey do the programme and we always prided ourselves on it being up to date, might not've been glossy paper etc but you always got up to date stats. And other stuff too. Sadly it all went skew whiff a long time ago. But good to see this thread being well received.
Pete - I too recall Chris Hamshare. You are going back a long way, mate.
Tim, I have the game that you refer to on VHS. It took place on 16th November 1991 and ended up Ashford 3 Hastings 4. It was indeed filmed by Bob Keen. If you want to copy it let me know and I can bring it to the Pilot Field on Saturday. I would copy it for you but don't have a clue how to do it.
Phil I believe there's a place in Bohemia road that will transfer videos onto a cd for about £12 i think if you wanted it done? It's right on the corner of Tower road.
Anyone recall the old Salisbury Ground at Victoria Park? I think you may have been a **** if you paid to get in there - it was all pretty wide open. This, I seem to recall, will be mid 90s when City had just been promoted to the old Beazer Homes Premier and Town won 4-3 after a truly end to end game in which I am sure, Peter Carman saved a late penalty. Dave on the left - Dave Moore - started up the Ghost fanzine way back in January 91 with Steve Weekes who is now in Sweden I think. Next to Dave is Steve who used to steward at Hastings, behind him is Mark (?) who I said a quick hallo to at Faversham on Saturday, then we have Wendy and er..... can't remember your name! I do remember a demented old lady at Salisbury who used to abuse away teams......
30 April 95 - and the anything but Southern League's Cup Final had two clubs just about the furthest apart - Hastings Town and Leek Town who had been moved sideways from the Northern Premier League to the Beazer Prem. Leek did the double over us in the league, 2-1 in Hastings, 1-0 at their place - but we did the same in the Cup Final, 1-0 at home (Danny McGill) and 2-1 at Harrison Park where Sticky Willard and Keiran O'Shaugnessy got the goals. We got bollocked by the local plod for chucking tickertape on the pitch when the teams ran out - it was almost worth the 500 mile round trip just to see such jobsworthesque enforcement......
That League Cup Final at Leek Town again - remember Steve Powell? He came to Town from Crawley in the early mid 90s and was a very useful left back. Can't remember where he went - well, this was 18 years ago after all. Leek have ended up in the Evo Stick Northern League's Division One South which they currently lead......
And what about our late unlamented neighbours - the team of many names, the most memorable of which was St Leonards StamCroft. They spent a lot of money on Fort Fun as it came to be known - Glyn White came up with tag - but this view is how it was prior to that pitch levelling and stand building. Remember?
Early 90s and a friendly against a Tottenham outfit - and to finish my latest offering on a poignant note - Richard Callaway on the right, centre is Andy Blondrage and on the left - one of the biggest characters of Hastings Town/United, Steve Smudger Smith who was killed in a motorbike accident several years ago. Those who were at Spalding United , 99-00 maybe, will recall Smudger being carted off to have his head stitched up after a big clash left him leaking badly. We diverted to Peterborough in the coach to pick him up afterwards and he climbed on to a huge cheer and then had us rocking as he announced "They gave me some pills for my head" and waved a bottle (Pils)..... Only you Smudger - never forgotten, mate, never forgotten.....
One more thing - the bad language detection software has acted again - and substituted **** for "t w a t" in my caption on the Salisbury City ground at Victoria Park - while overlooking "bollocking" in my first caption relating to the cup final at Leek.......
Oh go on then - one more - the old Elphinstone Road end stand pretty chocka for a 91/92 encounter with Salisbury City who Town beat 2-1 in front of 730 punters - goals from Sticky Willard and Keith Miles. We were battling it out with Weymouth and Havant Town and that was a crucial late season haul of three points on our way to the Southern League South's title. Recognise yourself at all?
That shot of the Spurs friendly also contains Nayim, of, from-the Half-way-line fame. I waited around after the game and got his autograph. That's either Nicky Barmby or Darren Caskey out of focus in the foreground too.
Forgotten name update - how could I forget Richard Cope's name - for it is he who is far right of the motley group I snapped at Salisbury City. And at the Guernsey game, Windy made himself known just as Pat did at Faversham.
Richard has managed to lose even more hair than I have in the battle of the Chrome Domes.
Cheer up fellas - forget the Guernsey blues - here's another one from the 91-92 championship season as Hastings Town sealed promotion to the Beazer Homes Premier as it was then known. On the left - Mickey Crowe, then Keith Miles being held up by that great centre half David Scott, John Sillet in civvies, Tony Burt, Peter Carman and finally, Peter Petcovic. Scotty came from Christ knows where, I just cannot remember, but once he got in the side he was a tremendous defender and it was a huge loss when Dover snapped him the following season as Town struggled to cope with the tough demands of Premier football. He was badly injured playing for Dover against Kettering I think it was a few seasons later - double leg break. A real shame - great player, good bloke.
Still playing around with this - combine that with my computeresque ineptness and it takes time for things to become apparent - like being able to use a slide show when I top this up with related photos - let's see how I get on here. Couple of photos from Ashford Town - Hastings Town games of many moons ago. Stuart Playford features in one but I can't recall which game that is - may be the FA Cup tie in 95/96 which Town lost 1-3 in front of 966 punters. Town were Beazer Prem and Ashford were Beazer South so that would've been a turn over.
Top bloke Stuart - if anybody gave it all for the cause, it was him. He would go out there on a Saturday afternoon, wreck his knees for 90 minutes, spend the rest of the weekend on crutches and go to work on Monday. It would be great to see "George" involved at the Pilot Field again.
The other Ashford-Hastings photo, both of them at their very adequate Homelands ground, was an FA Trophy tie in 98/99 which Town won 2-0, both goals from that flawed diamond of a player - Lee McRobert (who's dad, Peter, played at centre half - bloody good one too - well into his 40s) in front of 531. At left, Mark Morris - on the ball, another top man, Stuart Myall, then Danny er someone (!) and far right, it's "George" again.....
I remember this game well Simon. I was standing on the bank when an endless stream of Weymouth fans poured in through the top gate ...I think they had been drinking in the fort fun bar or something....good atmosphere that game. Its good to see the old stand (the one that no longer exists) ...I cant remember the year but it must have been about the same time as the Weymouth game, when Crawley fans virtually filled that old stand up. I know Tery White scored a peach of a free kick right in front of them Oh happy days !!!!!

Wow - check this out from 21 odd years ago - good old YouTube....... Some of the names from those days, Town's first Beazer Premier season - remember Blondrage, Wynter, Burt, Miles, Burke, Henderson, Carman, Sillett, Giles etc etc?
This is Norton Road, once home of Baldock Town who's claim to fame is producing one Kevin Phillips who, at 73, continues to grace Premiership pitches. All the action seems to be down the far end where home support is conspicuous by it's low numbers. Very respectable ground actually where things were to go wrong for Baldock and they folded in the early thousands I think. This would've been possibly 91-92 and a rare Town defeat, 2-1 in front of 287 punters with Paul Giles getting the goal.
15/2/92 - Promotion clash with Weymouth who brought five coach loads to contribute handsomely to a 1200 attendance, Town's largest of a memorable promotion season in which they finished 13 points clear of the Terras, as Weymouth are known. We did a huge double over them that season, 2-0 at the Pilot Field (Blondrage, Burke) and 2-1 at their place a few weeks later, two great goals from Sticky Willard and Paul Giles putting us 2-0 up at half time. I still recall saying to someone at the start of the second half - "We do NOT want to concede early" and 47 minutes it's 2-1 and the Wessex Stadium heaving! 1538 attendance and if memory serves correctly, Weymouth sealed second spot a few weeks later in front of 2800 odd - a huge gate for that level. Anyway - here are two rather grainy pictures from the home game......
17 August 1991 and Town kick off that memorable championship season with a 4-0 win at Dunstable with goals from Messrs Blondrage 2, Willard and Giles. 159 attendance on a hot afternoon as Town made the perfect start. We'd lost there 2-1 the previous season - one of those games where we did everything but score. That was put right with a vengeance the following season - and here we see the Dunstable keeper deal with a free kick.....
Second photo - 11 Jan 92 and plenty behind the open Wood End see Terry slot home a penalty against Gosport Borough in another 4-0 win. 518 attendance with Tel getting a couple and Carlton Wynter and Paul Giles the other two. Both Gosport and Dunstable ended up dropping into county league football but are on the way back up - Gosport in particular who are now acclimatising to life in Conference South.
Hi Windy - that Crawley game was probably the year later in the Beazer Premier when, if memory serves correctly, we won 2-0 in front of 735 punters. That sparked off that dozen or so game run of being unable to beat them!
Yeah that sounds about right mate...I just loved the way Terry rubbed it in the Crawley fans faces ....I believe it was around bonfire night because there were alot of fireworks being chucked around by Crawley fans that day...and they were the ones who ending up getting the rocket oh sweeeeeeeeeeeet !!!!
14 March 1992 - Town away to Havant Town who had just come up from the Wessex League. Havant were after second spot and battling it out with Weymouth. We were 2-0 up I'm sure - goals from Terry White and Paul Burke - but lost it 2-3 with, er hate to say it, a Deano own goal settling it?? Whatever - it had no impact on us as we were to win the league by 13 points but Havant only missed by three points to Weymouth. 384 at Westleigh Park that afternoon. Havant were to merge with Waterloovile a few seasons later.
And what of the encounter at Kingsmeadow earlier that season? United gave a decent account of themselves in an entertaining game which finished 3-1 to AFCW. Kingsmeadow, which they still share with Kingstonian, was well full that September the 25th afternoon - 2873 punters with a big shout from the U's support when Sean Ray reduced an AFCW lead to 2-1 on 74 minutes. I'm hearing that they are after a return to Wimbledon which is understandable for the obvious "going home" reason plus that Kingsmeadow has a capacity of around 4000 which might be a bit tight for AFCW's ambitions - even if last season saw those ambitions limited to just staying up in League 2! Anyway - remember Ryan Peters? Bit of a flawed diamond I seem to recall.....

Going back not so very far in time - and thanks to Bert Lintsen for the attached photo - that 2004-2005 Ryman South game at home to AFC Wimbledon who were on that inexorable climb up the semi pro ladder. Seem to recall this one finished 1-1 in front of a big big attendance of 1834. That game was notorious for the ideas mooted before hand about raising prices as a one off due to the huge away following AFCW took everywhere. That was seen by many at the time as sheer greed (er, which it was) with a massive pay day being put at risk when AFCW supporters found out and threatened to boycott the game. Common sense prevailed and United must've made a load of loot out of it.....
2001-2002, what a season and the one when I started videoing - badly - Hastings Town games. Luckily the timing was impeccably fitted in with a great promotion season and those who were there that August evening at Long Mead cannot have forgotten Town's 5-1 win to follow on from the opening day 2-1 win at home to Wisbech. This picture - while not the best quality - is of the Boswell Barmy Army enjoying Chris Honey's 44th minute equaliser - poorish quality is because it's a still from the video - but it adequately conveys the enjoyment of what was a superb goal created by Duncan McArthur.....
Those of you familiar with the online fanzine that Karl Horton and I put together will have sussed the picture above is in there too - and there is of course the relevant link on the club website - www.ghostof.co.uk/
It is tempting to maybe revive the old Ghost within this forum - sooooo if reaction is favourabe etc etc - then watch this space
If you wanted to SS I could create a separate part of the forum for your 'ghost of' articles, excellent site and sure you noticed I included a credited snippet of a match report from it from the past in the Leatherhead programme which I hope was ok for yourself.

I think you will find this was our goal in this game at home scored by Sawyyer, not Frankie can't remember his first name . Probably the best picture ever taken by me ....was offered money for it by the local rag at the time but refused.
That's it ...Marcus Sawyyer (2ys in his name I remember that ) he only played a few games but scored this goal direct from a free kick ...looked like a young Ade
SI have you got any photos from the Forest friendly in what I assume was 1997ish? My first match at the PF
Also can anyone put into context the Paul Smith transfer that led to the match? 50k must have been huge at the time? How good a player was he at our level then? Was it a big deal for the club as in were they reluctant to sell for less and was there any interest from other clubs?

Great picture, Windy. You should have that reproduced in a programme. Somewhere, SOMEWHERE, I have a photo of Steve Cuggy rounding the Cheltenham keeper at Whaddon Road to put Town 1-0 up, and can I find it!!!!
This, I am sure is from Hastings Town's 2-1 win at Sudbury Town on 22/2/92 - very respectable gate of 494. Big Carlton Wynter on the goal line with Keith Miles in front of him - Dean White on the edge of the box and perched on Wynnie's right shoulder is Andy Blondrage. Wynnie and Paul Giles got the Town goals that afternoon. Sudbury Town were to merge with Sudbury Wanderers in 1999 and are now known as AFC Sudbury in Ryman North after a sideways move from the Southern League..

Dan - I think I may have a picture or two but will have to look for them. I do recall taking one of the embankment thronging with people - we had 4888 in that night I seem to remember.
Paul Smith was only about 19 and never played more than a handful of games for Town before Dean White carried out a great bit of business by getting £50,000 from Forest which was colossal money in those days - not that we'd sneeze at it today! And Deano also negotiated the friendly - more top business as Forest sent their top side with just the one absentee who everyone EVERYONE wanted to see - Stuart Pearce! But it was still a great evening and did the game end 0-0??
Paul never really made it at Forest and ended up at Lincoln City.
That's great Simon, many thanks! Yeah recall it being 0-0 and that was the season that Forest for relegated after finishing 7th the season before so have always thought we played a part in their relegation!
SS re Danny er could it possilbly be Danny Simmonds ?
Hi Pete - re that Ashford game and the unknown Danny - his name was on the tip of my tongue and a quick flick back through Ghost 22 reveals that it is, in fact, Danny Chapman who I seem to recall we got from Dover or was it Gravesend........ Anyway - Danny Chapman it was!
Further and further back we go - and, er, sorry Tel, here we have a rare penalty spot blemish by our coach some 22 years ago - I seem to recall this was, 4/5/91, the final game of another frustrating Beazer Homes Southern Division season which had seen Town not quite the finished product - again! This game was a 0-0 draw at home to runners up Trowbridge Town who in the intervening years have dropped into county football. That 90/91 season saw the division won by Buckingham Town who were denied promotion on ground grading - that Southern League rule book....... As to this penalty - wellllllll, in all fairness to Terry, the keeper's gone the right way and actually pulled off a good save. Town, of course, got it emphatically right the following season!
And to that memorable 01-02 season - Banbury away on the 22nd of September, 2-2 going into the final stages and then Chris Honey latched onto a huge throw out from Dave King and fired home a great winning goal which we probably didn't deserve - not that we were complaining! Picture quality isn't special I know - it's a still from the video I shot that afternoon. I keep meaning to get those videos onto a disc and then onto the pc - I have a dvd recorder/player sooooo must be able to copy tape to disc - can't I? Must be a devillish combo of scart leads etc etc......
Halesowen Town - always used to have good encounters with them. Remember that classic riposte from the cabbie when Phil Donaldson and I climbed in and asked for Halesowen Town Football Club - "You know where it is?"....... Anybody remember Terry White's centre circle free kick that December afternoon in the 95/96 season? Tel spotted the keeper off his line and promptly floated that free kick in over his head from half way and 1-0 was how it finished. Went through a phase against the Yeltz as they were known where they beat us down here and we beat them up there. Whatever - later that afternoon, I was reading about that sensational strike as the Birmingham Sports Argus - or was it the Pink Un - called it, on the train home - a British Rail InterCity train..... Now that's got me all misty eyed - BR........
More reminiscing back to 1996 and that Sussex Senior Cup Final against the old enemy Crawley Town. Sadly I work just a mile or two from Broadfield and get constant reminders from "mates" at work about the 28 league difference in status between them and us - but this still brings back good memories. Top pic is Danny Simmonds about to launch one - on the bench in the background are visible Tupps and Matt Ball. Group pic - from L, Matt Ball, Stuart Playford, Phil Henderson, Sticky Willard (?), Terry White who appears to have grown an extra pair of arms, Tony Burt, James Creed behind him (?), Keiran O'Shaugnessy, Liam Barham, Garry Wilson and Richard Callaway extreme R. Lower pic is Stuart Playford firing in a cross field pass.
I stand to be corrected - but I am pretty sure this was an unusually busy embankment on the evening of the Nottingham Forest friendly when 4888 piled in. All part of the deal Town did with Forest for Paul Smith. 1995 was it? Over to Phil Donaldson for an update on that - THE Hastings stats guru!
These threads are the best bit on the forum! And am a happy bunny cos I have at last spotted myself in a picture. The mention of Halesowen brought back a random memory - Does anyone else remember the totally bonkers singing that their fans kept up for the entire second half of a match at the PF, probably early 90s, where they just sang" Another window" over and over to the tune of O Sole Mio (better known as Just One Cornetto)? Or is this another false memory, along with Harol the Hamster being a proper mascot?
Halesowen were always a good mob to come up against. They would do their last game of the season in fancy dress and I recall one game at the Pilot Field when they were the visitors somewhat appropriately - as Dean White who was manager at the time - had been tipped off by one of the linesmen that it was the referee's last game before retiring. So it was all stage managed that Deano would kick up a stink about something at the very last knockings of the game (on which nothing hinged) - the ref duly went over to the linesman who was frantically waving his flag while Deano crept up behind him and tipped a bucket of water over him. Hilarity all round - what a way to end a season.
The 0-0 draw that you refer to Pat was actually played season 1988/89 attendance 392. In 1989/90 the score was 2-2 crowd 371 and in 1990/91 it ended up 1-1 crowd 320. Hope this helps a little ,but no doubt SS can fill in the gaps.
